Agassi Is Ousted, Courier Survives In Memphis Tennis

Todd Martin upset third-seeded Andre Agassi, while top-seeded Jim Courier saved a match point for the second straight day before advancing last night at the Kroger-St. Jude International tournament.

Martin beat Agassi 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and Courier downed Jonathan Stark 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

In another quarterfinal, second-seeded Michael Chang easily beat No. 9 Andre Chesnokov 6-4, 6-0.

Courier meets No. 6 seed Amos Mansdorf, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Dave Randall, in today's semifinals.

-- Martina Navratilova maintained her mastery over Zina Garrison-Jackson with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the Chicago Slims tournament. Second-seed Navratilova will face Katerina Maleeva in today's semifinal. In the other semi, top-seeded Monica Seles meets third-seed Mary Joe Fernandez.

-- Second-seeded Boris Becker trounced eighth-seeded Michael Stich 6-2, 6-2 in an all-German quarterfinal at the Muratti Time indoor tournament in Milan, Italy.

-- SKIING

Three-time Olympic champion Alberto Tomba of Italy, fighting the flu, entered and exited the World Alpine Ski Championships in Shizukuishi, Japan, in the space of 30 seconds when he failed to complete the first run of the slalom.

The leader on a course that became more rutted with each racer was the first starter, Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt, already a double medalist in these ski games. He covered a one-third mile course flagged by 60 gates in 49.88 seconds. Austria's Thomas Stangassinger was second in 50.01 and Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg was third in 50.06.

-- American Shannon Nobis captured two gold medals, inthe woman's slalom and the Alpine combined, at the World Winter University Games in Poland.

-- Austrian Mathias Berthold edged countryman Hans Hofer by a thousandth of a second in winning the slalom in the World Pro Championship in Aspen, Colo.

-- BASKETBALL

Meadowlark Lemon is returning to the Harlem Globetrotters. Lemon, who played more than 7,500 games for the Globetrotters from 1957-79, signed a contract to play the balance of the 1993 domestic tour - until April 10.

-- BOXING

Next Saturday's WBC super lightweight title fight between Greg Haugen (31-4-1) formerly of Auburn, and Julio Cesar Chavez (83-0) will be shown via satellite at Longacres Park as the highlight of a four-bout championship card. Tickets are $15. The other bouts: Terry Norris vs. Maurice Blocker for the WBC super welterweight title; Michael Nunn vs. Dan Morgan for the WBA super middleweight crown and Azumah Nelson vs. Gabriel Ruelas for the WBC super featherweight championship. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with the first bout at 6 p.m.

-- Gert Bo Jacobsen of Denmark won a unanimous decision over American Manning Galloway in Randers, Denmark, for the WBO welterweight championship. It was Galloway's first loss since 1986.

-- Tony Lopez, of Sacramento, retained his WBA lightweight championship with a 12-round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Dingaan Thobela, of South Africa, in Sacramento.

-- HORSE RACING

Emerald Racing Association announced that admission to Yakima Meadows for live spring-summer racing and Longacres Park for simulcasts of the Yakima races will be $2.50. Discount books for daily general admission at either site are available in books of 25, 50 and 100. Turf Club admission at either site will be $7.50 daily.

-- COURTS

Phoenix Cardinals wide receiver Ernie Jones was arrested Thursday after crack cocaine and marijuana was discovered in his car, a Phoenix police spokesman said.

-- TRACK AND FIELD

Decathlete Dan O'Brien beat Olympic gold medalist Robert Zmelic and Reebok teammate Aric Long to win individual titles in the 55-meter hurdles and the high jump at the Idaho Vandal Indoor Invitational track meet in his hometown of Moscow.

Washington dominated the women's sprints. Claudine Robinson won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.96 seconds and Tami Mathewson won the 55-meter dash in 7.12. The UW won the 1,600-meter relay.
