UW Didn't Look Far For Recruits -- 10 Of 19 Who Sign Are From State
Whether by choice or necessity, the Washington Huskies recruited heavily in their home state in 1993.
Ten of the 19 high school seniors who signed letters of intent yesterday to play football for the Huskies are from Washington. This year's crop of Washingtonians follows a year in which only four recruits played high-school football in Washington.
Leading the local push were four players from Seattle's O'Dea High School. Linebacker Jayson Bass, running back Jovan McCoy, defensive back Kyle Roberts and lineman Sekou Wiggs all signed with Washington.
The other six state players who signed with Washington yesterday: linebacker Jerry Jensen and defensive back/running back Terry Hollimon, both from Everett's Cascade High; Vashon linebacker Jason Chorak, widely considered, along with Bass, one of the state's top two recruits; Sedro-Woolley defensive end Cameron Cleeland; Lynnwood linebacker Chris Campbell; and Mariner quarterback Shane Fortney.
California accounted for a sizable portion of Washington's freshman class, but the percentage was down from last year. Seven of UW's 15 recruits were from California in 1992.
Five Californians signed yesterday: defensive back Tony Parrish, from Marina High, Huntington Beach; quarterback Mike Smith, Bishop Amat High, La Puente; lineman Mostafa Sobhi, Hawthorne High, Los Angeles; running back/defensive back Rashaan Shehee, Foothill High, Bakersfield; and lineman Ryan Bradley, Monache High,
Porterville.
The Huskies also received signatures from defensive lineman Darius Jones, of Central Catholic High in Portland; receiver Fred Coleman, Lee High, Tyler, Texas; offensive lineman Petrocelli Kesi, St. Louis High, Honolulu; and tight end Jeremy Brigham, Saguaro High, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Of the 19 players known to have given oral commitments to play for Washington, two changed their minds and signed with other schools.
Lineman Vilaimi Maumau from St. Louis High in Honolulu, who orally committed to Washington three weeks ago, signed with Colorado. Lineman Chris Brymer of Apple Valley, Calif., signed a letter of intent with USC after orally committing to the Huskies two weeks ago. Brymer said he didn't want to be so far from home.
Another out-of-state recruit who decided against the Huskies in the final hour was defensive back Shino Prater of Sam Houston High in Arlington, Texas. Prater signed with Penn State today.
