Huskies To Sign Another Jones
Darius Jones will become the third member of his family to play football for the University of Washington.
Jones, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker from Portland's Central Catholic High, will sign a letter of intent Wednesday to play for Washington, said his coach, Terry Summerfield.
The Huskies now have a monopoly on the Jones brothers. Matt Jones is a fullback for the Huskies. The oldest brother, Mark Jones, is a former linebacker and a graduate assistant coach for the Huskies.
All three brothers will be at a news conference announcing the signing Wednesday afternoon.
"Darius' brothers will be there with their jerseys and Rose Bowl rings," Summerfield said. "I believe they're going to bring a jersey for Darius too."
Jones, who bench-presses 355 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.55 seconds, is one of the top three recruits in Oregon, according to Super Prep magazine.
The Huskies missed on Oregon's top recruit, Eugene's Jamal Wallace, when the receiver gave an oral commitment to Oregon last week. Wallace said his final choices were Colorado, Oregon and Washington.
Two Seattle-area players, Redmond High's Matt Banks and Bellevue High's Brad Callan, said last night they would accept scholarships to play at Big Sky Conference schools.
Banks, a 6-foot, 195-pound quarterback, said he will play at Idaho after turning down offers from Eastern Washington, Montana State and Air Force.
Callan, a 6-3, 250-pound lineman, said he'll play at Montana State. He also took trips to Montana and Idaho.
