Red Wings Get Kings' Coffey -- Carson Goes To L.A. In Six-Player Swap

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Kings today sent veteran defenseman Paul Coffey to the Detroit Red Wings for center Jimmy Carson in a six-player trade.

Along with Coffey, the Kings dealt right-winger Jim Hiller and minor-league forward Sylvain Couturier to Detroit for Carson and minor-league forwards Marc Potvin and Gary Shuchuk.

Coffey, 32, goes to his fourth NHL team. He also played for the Edmonton Oilers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Carson, 24, rejoins the Kings, the team that drafted him in 1986 from the junior Verdun Canadiens. He was traded in 1988 to Edmonton as part of the Wayne Gretzky deal.
