Crest Division Bellevue

Inexperience? There's not a senior on the 19-player roster, but there are 12 freshmen. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're getting better every game, but we're very young. I think we can win some ball games. I definitely think we can surpass last season. We've had two games this year already we should have won (48-39 loss to Seattle Prep, 46-41 loss to Newport). My girls need to learn to put a whole ballgame together."

Interlake

-- NICKNAME - Saints. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 6-10, fourth in division, 9-11 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Alan Russell, second season, 9-11. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Emily Repanich (5-9, sr.), G Beth Iwamoto (5-6, sr.), G Kristi Doman (5-8, sr.), P Sky Sherwood (5-8, sr.), G Angie Flynn (5-8, jr.), G Kelly Wilson (5-8, jr.), G Tina Baker (5-7, so.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - G Chantel Vinson (5-4, jr.), P Bea Machinena (5-10, sr.), P Ginger Bonnell (5-10, P), G Kelley Merriam (5-7, sr.), G Crystal Rector (5-7, fr.). -- OUTLOOK - Loaded Saints are solid favorites to win the Crest. Team isn't huge, but quickness and experience make Interlake a contender for a state berth. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "I think we're going to be OK, particularly in our own division. . . . We're going to have a good run at it."

Issaquah

-- NICKNAME - Indians. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 2-14, first in division, 2-18 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Mark Lutzenhiser, first season. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Amy Budge (5-6, jr.), G Shelby Mitchell (5-5, jr.), G Sarah Fulton (5-7, jr.), F Carrie Anderson (5-10, so.), F Rochelle Coffey (5-7, so.), G Shelly Russell (5-3, so.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - G/F Jodi Sackville (6-0, fr.), G Jessica DeCoria (5-6, fr.), C Erin Skipper (5-11, fr.), G Katie Desmond (5-6, so.). -- OUTLOOK - Indians are talented but young. If we measure ourselves at the end of the season compared to the first of the season, we're going to be such a superior team comparatively . . . I feel real positive because the kids are going to just get better and better. We're doing pretty good. The kids are excited. I'm excited."

Mercer Island

-- NICKNAME - Islanders. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 14-2, first in division, 19-7. -- HEAD COACH - Barb Berry, second season, 19-7 (qualified for state). -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Amy Hostvedt (5-9, jr.), G Melissa Parker (5-9, jr.), G Jola Prock (5-7, jr.), G Karen Schwartz (5-3, sr.), F Kylie Sparks (5-10, jr.), F Kim Tutland (6-0, jr.), F Galen Longstreth (5-11, jr.) -- TOP NEWCOMERS - F Jane Kreager (5-10, sr.), C Lindsay ODell (6-1, sr.), G/F Jamie Richards (5-9, fr.), G Lisa McInnis (5-5, sr.), G/F Ali Hale (5-8, jr.). -- OUTLOOK - Graduation losses of 5-9 Dena Dey (Stanford) and 6-1 Courtney Longstreth (Amherst) left Islander starting lineup shorter in the middle and shorter on experience. Strong defense has kept M.I. even in league play (1-1) so far this season, but offense must mature for team to return to districts. Should make eight-team KingCo tournament field. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "They're good kids and working hard and playing good defense like last year. But they're a young team. I think everything's there but our shooting percentage. Once we get the kids settled down, and our shots start falling . . ."

Newport

-- NICKNAME - Knights. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 9-7, third in division, 13-10 overall. -- HEAD COACH - C.J. Knights should return to playoffs and might contend for top-four KingCo tournament berth. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We have a real balanced attack. I think we're deep. We're inexperienced, but I don't hesitate to play anybody."

Sammamish

-- NICKNAME - Totems. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 11-5, second in division, 18-12 overall (eighth in state). -- HEAD COACH - Kathy Langston, 16th season. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - W Karen Webster (5-8, jr.), P Analisa Roberts (5-9, sr.), W Tari Beck (5-8, sr.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - P Cindy Jensen (5-11, so.), W Jill Butler (5-5, so.), P Adrien Little (5-10, jr.), W Amy Loescher (5-4, so.), P Danielle Peterson (5-8, so.), W Julie Sponar (5-8, so.). -- OUTLOOK - Young Totems have only three seniors on the roster, the only returning varsity players. And top two scorers so far (Jensen, Butler) are sophomores. Talent is there for playoff season. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're just really young. Fun though, man. They're fun to coach. . . . The kids care about each other. There's really good chemistry. And I'm really pleased with their smarts. They learn quickly and work hard."

Crown Division Bothell

-- NICKNAME - Cougars. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 7-9, fifth in division, 10-15 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Terry Galloway, fourth season, 36-34. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - W/P Stacy Johanson (5-11, sr.), PG Janelle Clem (5-7, sr.), W Stacey Thomas (5-7, sr.), P Ronda Carlson (5-9, sr.), P Jennifer Barnes (5-11, jr.), P Shannon Butler (5-9, jr.), W Rachel Gaines (5-6, jr.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - W Sara Frahm (5-5, sr.), PG/W Julie Allen (5-7, sr.), W/P Dana Johnson (5-8, so.), PG/W Nicole Krell (5-9, so.). -- OUTLOOK - Cougars have been slowed in early season, with badly sprained ankles suffered by starters Carlson and Butler. Now nearly healthy, team has experience at every position and last season's top KingCo scorer returning in Johanson. Look for Cougs in districts. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "Hopefully we won't have any more injuries. We've had our fill. . . . Experience will be in our favor. I have seniors who have been in the program for three years, and you depend on seniors to carry an extra load for you."

Inglemoor

-- NICKNAME - Vikings. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 9-7, third in division, 12-10 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Frank Naish, fourth season, 22-40. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Kelly Kaiser (5-9, sr.), F Tami Bizjak (5-10, sr.), G Jennifer Hagen (5-9, sr.), G Valerie Wawrzycki (5-6, sr.), G Nicki Bennett (5-7, jr.), P Jennifer Eichhorn (5-11, sr.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - G Karen Maines (5-8, so.), G Michelle Dellino (5-7, so.), F Jocelyn Mitchell (5-11, so.), P Marie Beavo (5-11, so.). -- OUTLOOK - Three starters return from KingCo playoff team, including Kaiser, a first-team all-KingCo selection. Strengths includes experience six deep. Weaknesses include extreme inexperience beyond that and playing in tough division. Vikes could finish anywhere from third to fifth in division and still make playoffs. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We've got to fight to get in the playoffs. I'd say we're an above-average team in an above-average division. If we had this team in the division we had two years ago, we'd be in great shape."

Juanita

-- NICKNAME - Rebels. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 1-15, sixth in division, 2-17 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Teresa Benning, first season. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Tonya Hardenbrook (5-6, jr.), G/F Dana Lind (5-8, sr.), F Julieanne Lopez (5-8, sr.), G Stacy Rosen (5-6, sr.), F Karren Sanow (5-9, sr.), G Cheryl Sather (5-5, sr.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - G/F Jodi Rauch (5-8, so.), F Stephanie Riggins (5-9, jr.), F Tiffany Lewis (5-9, jr.), C Adria Sneed (6-1, so.), G Mari Yanagita (5-4, jr.), G Sarah Singer (5-4, so.). -- OUTLOOK - Only two returning starters, a first-year head coach, four wins in past two seasons and one of the strongest divisions in the state are reasons Rebs will sit out playoffs another year. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're just trying to pull it together. We're just trying to build a program. . . . We'll surprise some people. We've improved a lot already from the past few years."

Despite graduation losses of NCAA Division I signees Shanthi Barton (Oregon) and Chelsea Herman (Gonzaga), LW is expected to get to state tournament again and challenge Woodinville for division title in the meantime. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're starting one senior, three juniors and a sophomore, so they're still relatively young, and they're going to continue to improve as the season goes along. . . .They really like to move it up and down the floor. I think out strength would be athletic ability and drive, determination, relentlessness."

Redmond

-- NICKNAME - Mustangs. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 13-3, second in division, 17-8 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Jeannine Ewing-Frable, fourth season, 62-17. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Heather Tarr (5-8, sr.), G Ha Tran (5-0, sr.), C Wendy Roberts (5-10, jr.), G Angie Barnes (5-7, jr.), F Julie Gunther (5-8, jr.), C Liv Hagstrom (5-11, sr.), G Erin Danielson (5-7, sr.), F Carolyn Jenkins (5-8, jr.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - F Melissa Schaefer (5-9, jr.). -- OUTLOOK - Mustangs return four starters, including one of league's top point guards in Tran. With graduation of 6-1 Gina Sampson (Western Washington), team looking for reliable big person to fill its biggest need. Still, Redmond strong and experienced enough for another district appearance. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "I think we're going to have to fight and scratch to get out of our division. The KingCo is much stronger this year than any other year I've coached. . . . I think we're going to win a lot of games this year. I think we're going to do fine."

Woodinville

-- NICKNAME - Falcons. -- 1991-92 RECORD - 8-8, fourth in division, 12-11 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Keith Dalluge, third season, 21-23. -- TOP RETURNING PLAYERS - G Heather Toone (5-8, sr.), F Nikki Hedlund (5-9, sr.), G Tambi Gustafson (5-9, jr.), C April Saunders (5-11, jr.), F Anjalla Camren (6-0, jr.). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - C Jennie Leander (6-2, so.), C Leslie Tuiasosopo (6-1, so.), F Karina Brown (5-8, sr.), F Renee Schiferl (5-11, jr.), G Mandy Cufley (5-5, so.), G Megan Rabin (5-8, so.). -- OUTLOOK - Falcons are the green giants of the KingCo. Huge but young. So far, in 5-0 start, hugeness has made up for youth. Gustafson handles point and off-guard duties with equal skill. Should see Woodinville in its first state tournament next March. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "It just seems like we have a little bit more personnel and a few more players to match up with other teams. And they're very talented. A lot of height takes care of that, and also takes care of a little bit of the inexperience of them not playing as a team. I think we're starting to come out of that."
