Mcbroom Sweeps Kentwood To 3-0

Jeff McBroom scored seven of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, and Anthony Beamon 10 of his 20 in the period as the Kentwood High School boys basketball team remained unbeaten with a 64-57 nonleague victory over Sumner last night.

It was the third straight victory for Kentwood. Sumner fell to 0-2.

McBroom, a 6-4 senior, had nine rebounds, and Darren Smith added eight.

Drew Nolte led the Spartans with 17 points.

-- AT MARYSVILLE-PILCHUCK 70, UNIVERSITY 67 - Josh Rosenbach dropped in two free throws with two seconds left to clinch the nonleague victory as the Tomahawks won their first game since the 1990-91 season. Rosenbach scored 13, Brooks Meek-Anderson 15, and Beeb Randall 14 for Marysville-Pilchuck (1-1), which lost its season opener to Newport after going winless last season. University of Spokane was led by Kurt Heimbigner's 24 points. Jon Millar added 16. -- EVERETT 50, AT LAKE STEVENS 48 - Trailing by two at halftime, Everett held Lake Stevens scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter to capture a 43-36 lead en route to the nonleague victory. Sophomore guard Jessen Schilaty scored six points in the third quarter and Ian Berger added four. Everett's biggest lead was nine in the final quarter. Lake Stevens fought back to 50-48 and Everett missed a free throw with four seconds left, but Lake Stevens missed a 20-footer from the left wing at the buzzer. Senior post Peter Jelsing scored 10 points and added 19 rebounds for Lake Stevens. Schilaty led Everett with 15 points while Chad Holliston added 13. -- MOUNTLAKE TERRACE 70, AT LYNDEN 56 - Brad Dowhaniuk scored 14 points in the first quarter, including four three-pointers during an 18-4 run for Mountlake Terrace to start the game. Senior forward Nate Smith scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hawks (1) in the nonleague game. It was the season-opener for Lynden, defending Class A state champion making its debut for new coach Rob Visser.

-- BELLINGHAM 58, SNOHOMISH 52 - Jaret Treber scored 13 of his 18 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Bellingham (2-0) won the nonleague game over the Panthers (0-2). Jason Bischofberger led Snohomish with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Cody Thomas added 13.

-- ROOSEVELT 73, AT ANACORTES 67 - Lars Gesseth scored 19 of his 33 points in the second half and Joe Lewis scored all his 11 points in the final few minutes of the Roughriders' nonleague victory. Aaron Starkovich led Anacortes with 24. -- AT LIBERTY 66, SHELTON 53 - Leading scorer Eric Henrikson (14 points) had 11 of his team's 41 rebounds as defense-minded Liberty beat a taller Shelton team in a nonleague game. Brian Jones (13 points) added six assists for Liberty (1-1). -- AT KING'S 65, MERIDIAN 62 - King's built a 13-point second-half lead but Meridian cut the leads to a point in the fourth period of the nonleague game. With 18 seconds left, and King's leading by one point, a King's player missed a free throw and teammate Dan Shields grabbed the rebound and scored on a putback for a thee-point lead that held up. For King's (1-1), Chad Urie had 13 rebounds and 14 points, and Jason Beam added 12 points. For Meridian (0-1), Randy Weir had a game-high 18 points, Bob Bennum added 15 points, and forward Ty Harrison had 10 rebounds and 13 points.

-- WEST SEATTLE 61, AT EVERGREEN 52 - Travis Ray, a 6-4 transfer from Louisiana, scored 23 points on 11-for-15 from the field to lead West Seattle (1-1). William Washington scored 12 for West Seattle Nick De la Cruz, junior guard, scored 18 points for Evergreen (0-1.

-- SEATTLE LUTHERAN 64, PORTLAND LUTHERAN 34 - Jason Vann scored 14 points, and Andy Sharp added 12 as the Saints (1-1) won their first game in an invitational tournament. Dennis Jones led the Blue Jays (0-1) with 11 points. In an earlier game, Neah Bay beat Orcas 90-51.
