Mix Sets Two State Records
FEDERAL WAY - For three years, Issaquah High School's Leslie Mix has owned the 100-yard backstroke. The last time a different swimmer won the event at the state meet was in 1988.
This being her senior year, Mix decided to mix it up a little. For the first time, she swam the 500-yard freestyle in the Class AAA state meet at the King County Aquatic Center.
It took 4:53.45 seconds for Mix to beat the 11-year-old 500-yard freestyle record, the second oldest in state high-school swimming. Last night's competition was only the preliminaries for tonight's finals.
"I've always wanted to get some high-school records," said Mix. "I wanted to go 4:52, but maybe I will (tonight)."
The previous standard of 4:54.48 was set by Jenny Harshbarger swimming for Newport High School in 1981. Harshbarger went on to become one of the world's top swimmers.
About 30 minutes later, Mix established her second state record of the evening - this one in the 100-yard backstroke.
Her time of 56.41 also earned her automatic All-American honors. A two-hundreths of a second improvement this evening would qualify her for the prestigious Summer National meet.
"She's a real focused swimmer," Issaquah Coach Randy Radic. "In the last 14 to 15 months since I've coached her she's only missed two practices, and she was upset about it both times."
For the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Mix, practice makes fun.
"I really enjoy swimming," she said. "I know a lot of people don't like practice, but I look forward to it."
Mix is choosing among scholarship offers from Arizona State, Michigan, Minnesota and Florida.
Also earning automatic All-American honors in the backstroke were Kim Milligan of Shorewood in 57.21 and Alycia Ladd of Foss in 57.73.
Ladd, a sophomore, was also the fastest qualifier in the 100-yard freestyle, an event she won last year. Her time of 51.97 was three-tenths of a second from earning her a second All-American honor.
"It didn't feel that fast to me," said Ladd. "I felt like I was slapping the water, not going through it."
Sammamish, one of the favorites for the team title, gained only seven spots in tonight's finals. Mercer Island led all teams with 10, Foss has seven, and South Kitsap has six.
