Suit Delays GM's Move To Arlington Plant
FORT WORTH, Texas
A fight over shutdown of a General Motors Corp. plant in Michigan has delayed movement of workers and production to the company's Arlington facility.
The automaker and union members said a lawsuit has thrown this month's plans to move workers from the Michigan plant into limbo until at least Feb. 1. Movement of the workers and production now would enable full production of two car models starting in November.
But the company told a Michigan judge it does not plan to build the Caprice and Buick Roadmaster Estate wagons at its Arlington plant until well after a ruling, now expected Jan. 19.
Ypsilanti Township filed a lawsuit against GM over closing of the Willow Run assembly plant. The township contends the automaker failed to live up to promises it made in return for $13.5 million worth of tax breaks.
