Mississippi State Loses Qb Robinson

-- COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Mississippi State senior quarterback Sleepy Robinson is out for the season, a diagnostic test confirmed yesterday. Robinson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Thursday night in the No. 24 Bulldogs' 30-6 victory over No. 13 Florida.

The injury ended Robinson's college career. He said he still hopes to get a shot at playing in the Canadian Football League.

-- Ryan Hancock passed for 385 yards and three touchdowns in his first college start to lead Brigham Young (2-3) to a 30-9 victory over Utah State (1-4) in Provo, Utah.

-- PRO FOOTBALL

Running back James Brooks signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a move that reunites him with Coach Sam Wyche. Brooks, who was waived by Cleveland earlier this week, played under Wyche for eight years in Cincinnati. He signed with the Browns as a Plan B free agent in March.

-- BASKETBALL

The NBA reached agreement with the officials union on a three-year contract extension. The extension through the 1994-95 season is expected to provide a sizeable pay increase.

-- Hubert Davis, the first draft pick of the New York Knicks this year, has agreed to a four-year contract worth $3.1 million, according to today's editions of The New York Times.

-- The New Jersey Nets signed 7-foot-2 center Dwayne Schintzius to a one-year guaranteed contract. Schintzius was an unrestricted free agent after being waived by the Sacramento Kings

in July.

-- TENNIS

USC defeated Washington 5-2 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in the first dual match of the season for both teams. At No. 1 singles, Brian MacPhie of USC, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation, defeated Chet Crile of UW, the No. 15-ranked player in the nation, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

-- Top-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia beat Cedric Pioline of France 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of a tennis tournament in Basel, Switzerland, and will face No. 3 Ivan Lendl, who breezed past Andrei Chesnokov of Russia 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 Boris Becker of Germany beat No. 7 Amos Mansdorf of Israel 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 and will be matched against Marc Rosset of Switzerland, who beat Peter Lundgren of Sweden 6-2, 6-4.

-- HOCKEY

The Seattle Thunderbirds acquired right winger Darcy Mattersdorfer from the Tri-City Americans for future considerations. Mattersdorfer, who will join the team for its game in Regina, Saskatchewan, tomorrow, had just been obtained by the Americans from the Victoria Cougars. He collected four goals and six assists in 66 games with the Cougars last season.

In another roster move, the T-birds assigned left winger Kees Roodbol to Surrey of the BCJHL.

-- Center Jamie Black, one of the Tacoma Rockets' top scorers last season, returned to the team after attending training camp with the Pittsburgh Penguins. And, the San Jose Sharks allowed Michal Sykora, a 19-year-old defenseman from Czechoslovakia, to return to the Rockets. He had played in the team's first two games.

The Rockets embarked on their first extended road trip of the season this weekend.

-- AUTO RACING

Michael Andretti turned a lap of 181.435 mph to smash the track record at Pennsylvania International Raceway in Nazareth, Pa., and take the pole for tomorrow's Grand Prix race.

-- Alan Kulwicki drove to the pole position for tomorrow's 400-mile NASCAR Winston Cup race at North Wilkesboro, N.C. Kulwicki, whose last victory was at Pocono in the spring, drove a lap at 117.133 mph.

-- SOCCER

Cliff McCrath, Seattle Pacific University's coach for the past 23 seasons, will be going for his 400th career victory today when the Falcons play at the University of Portland.

McCrath, who has a 399-145-65 record, has collected more than 300 wins at SPU.

-- The sixth-ranked Washington men's soccer team moved into first place of the Mountain Division of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 1-0 victory over visiting Fresno State. Freshman Scott Jenkins scored UW's (6-1-1, 2-1-0) goal.

-- FISHING

The Department of Fisheries announced a regulation change effective today for salmon fishing off Buoy-13 in Grays Harbor.

Fishing boundaries have been expanded to the west tips of the visible jetties, located on both sides of the harbor. This is because of the number of coho that remained on the Westport ocean quota.

The ocean season closed on Wednesday, but the Grays Harbor fishery is open seven days a week until further notice.
