CROWN DIVISION BOTHELL

-- 1991 RECORD - 0-5 in Crown (sixth), 0-9 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Rod Schaaf, first season. -- TOP RETURNEES - HB/FS Paul Delaney (sr., 6-1, 180), SS/QB Chris Sohn (sr., 5-11, 170), QB Tor Bailey (sr., 6-2, 183), OT/DT Sean McAfee (sr., 6-5, 245), OG/LB Todd Nevin (sr., 5-10, 200), OG Jim Fowler (sr., 6-0, 205), WR Ryan Rhoades (sr., 5-11, 165), G Adam DeYoung (sr., 5-11, 200), C/G Alton Pitre (sr., 6-1, 185), C Ryan Eden (jr., 6-2, 200), FB/CB Sean Condon (jr., 5-11, 175), FB/OLB Joel Johnson (sr., 5-11, 170), OG Josh Stein (sr., 6-0, 190), TE/MLB Jay Schulz (sr., 6-1, 195). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - None. -- OUTLOOK - Cougars return most of last year's starters, but they return from winless season with new system to learn. Lines should be strong, and Bailey had productive second half after taking over starting QB role. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're on that hurdle right now with 0-9 season of trying to get them to believe."

INGLEMOOR -- 1991 RECORD - 5-0 in Crown, 8-2 overall (lost 31-20 to Wilson in state-playoff opener). -- HEAD COACH - Frank Naish, 14th season, 64-55 record. -- TOP RETURNEES - QB/DB Paul Breckenridge (sr., 6-3, 185), OL/DL Ryan Showalter (sr., 6-0, 210), OL/DL Paul Berzin (sr., 6-2, 215), WR/OLB Scott Moody (sr., 5-11, 175), WR/DB Leon Dotter (sr., 5-11, 170), ILB/RB Rob Durfee (sr., 5-11, 205). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - RB/DB B.J. Quimba (sr., 5-10, 175), RB/LB Ryan Odegaard (sr., 5-11, 185). -- OUTLOOK - Last year's KingCo champion graduated 18 starters but returns strong passer in Breckenridge. Defense looks solid with return of two starting linebackers and some speed and experience in the secondary. Line is young but quicker than last year's. If offense comes together by second half of season, Inglemoor will challenge Redmond for division title. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "Last year's team expected to be good. This year's team, they don't know yet."

JUANITA -- 1991 RECORD - 1-4 in Crown (fifth), 2-7 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Mike Thomas, second season, 2-7 record. -- TOP RETURNEES - SE Ryan McGowan (sr., 5-11, 178), FL/DB Casey Dill (sr., 5-9, 150), TE Benji Dean (sr., 6-3, 185), C Ryan Kelly (sr., 6-2, 230), G/ILB Dave Cook (sr., 6-1, 210), OT/DT Robert Wilson (sr., 6-4, 255), OG/DL Eddie Vega (sr., 6-1, 220), RB/DB Kevin Griffin (jr., 5-10, 170). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - FB Eddie Johnson (jr., 5-10, 190), QB Brandon Stalwick (jr., 6-2, 185), ILB Greg Paribello (sr., 5-11, 213), OT Jeff Van de Mark (jr., 6-2, 248). -- OUTLOOK - Thomas, hired late in the summer last year, gets his first chance with reasonable preparation time to field a team at Juanita. That difference will be seen in the improved strength of this year's team, especially on the bulked-up lines. The weight program, combined with a year of the Thomas system and a school full of good athletes - including 4.5-second 40 sprinters Griffin and Johnson - gives Juanita an outside shot at the division's lone playoff berth. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "What a difference," Thomas said of having a year to prepare instead of a month. "Just in the attitudes and the work ethics."

LAKE WASHINGTON -- 1991 RECORD - 2-3 in Crown (fourth), 5-4 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Ron Sidenquist, fourth season, 9-18 record. -- TOP RETURNEES - QB/FS/P Pat Green (sr., 6-2, 205), C/ILB Nick Leighton (sr., 6-1, 195), CB Jeff Martin (sr., 5-10, 175), OT/DT Zac Drenkel (jr., 6-3, 220), WR/PK Ryan Bishop (jr., 5-6, 145), OT Chris Puckett (sr., 6-2, 250), FB Jim Spaulding (sr., 5-7, 175), TB Bart Repass (sr., 5-11, 168), TB Doug Birkland (sr., 5-7, 155). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - FB Levi Nyberg (sr., 5-9, 175), TB Jeff Heier (jr., 5-11, 163), ILB Jay Hart (so., 5-10, 182), KR Lance Landry (so., 5-10, 156), TE Chuck Vanderford (so., 6-0, 177). -- OUTLOOK - Kangs' 140-player turnout is largest in KingCo, and from that group comes experienced secondary players, good team speed and strong, versatile player in Green. From that group must also come enough big, quick, coordinated guys to replace an entire offensive line lost to gradution. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "I'm hoping by four games - after we've played nonconference - my youngsters aren't youngsters anymore. We know they're good athletes."

REDMOND -- 1991 RECORD - 3-2 in Crown (third), 6-3 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Rik Haines, second season, 6-3 record. -- TOP RETURNEES - QB Matt Banks (sr., 6-2, 180), RB Tom Jones (sr., 6-0, 180), OL/DL Mike Fridgen (sr., 6-2, 210), OT Phil Rose (sr., 6-0, 230), OG Cully Teel (sr., 6-2, 220), WR/RB Geoff Hirai (sr., 5-5, 150), WR Michael Williams (jr., 5-10, 160). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - RB/DB Jesse Travis (sr., 6-2, 204). -- OUTLOOK - Redmond's team speed and experience at key positions make it favorite in what looks more like a wide-open division. Weakness might be defense, where team suffered most of its graduation losses. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "People see we have a quarterback and tailback and pick us as a favorite. That's completely obnoxious to me."

WOODINVILLE -- 1991 RECORD - 4-1 in Crown (second), 6-4 overall (lost to Newport 28-7 in qualifying round for playoffs. -- HEAD COACH - Terry Agnew, third season, 7-12 record. -- TOP RETURNEES - DB/QB Donnie Murrell (sr., 5-11, 165), RB/DB Peter Finstuen (sr., 5-11, 180), WR/DB Todd Bertram (sr., 5-10, 160), DB David Quiggle (sr., 5-11, 180), OT Travis Anderson (sr., 6-4, 210), DL Mike Radvick (sr., 6-0, 225), OL Evan Metz (sr., 6-0, 185), LB Todd Bridgeman (sr., 5-11, 215), OT Chris Butterfield (sr., 6-0, 210), DL Brad Hutt (jr., 6-4, 235). -- TOP NEWCOMERS - RB Cody Leckner (jr., 6-3, 205), RB Ryan Moore (jr., 5-10, 160), WR Brian McIntosh (jr., 6-1, 170), QB/DB Ryan Lentz (so., 6-0, 165). -- OUTLOOK - Falcons return 10 starters, including five linemen. Not as much experience at skill positions, especially with injury (Bertram, back) and illness (mononucleosis) striking key players. Still Falcons should have enough to compete in division. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "I know if you're solid on the line, you've got a chance."

CREST DIVISION BELLEVUE

-- 1991 RECORD - 4-1 in Crest (tied for first), 8-2 overall (lost 40-34 in one overtime to Snohomish in state-playoff opener). -- HEAD COACH - Dwaine Hatch, 16th season, 89-57 record. -- TOP RETURNERS - FB/LB Scott Monroe (sr., 6-0, 240), TE/DT Adrian Eggleston (sr., 6-4, 225), HB/FS Mike Lewis (sr., 6-0, 200), HB/LB Josh Blake (sr., 6-0, 200), OT/DT Brad Callan (sr., 6-3, 240), OG/DE Pat Teske (sr., 6-0, 185), WR/DB Jamie Svenson (sr., 6-1, 180). -- KEY NEWCOMERS - QB Chris Hixson (sr., 6-3, 200), QB/DB/WR Brad Jefferson (jr., 5-11, 170), FB/DB Jamie Porter (jr., 6-0, 170); WR Cam Gravrock (sr., 6-2, 175). -- OUTLOOK - Wolverines are solid-to-outstanding at every position, returning two-year starters at most key spots. Top star is a bulked-up Monroe (up from 225 pounds), who was a first-team all-state linebacker as a junior. The team's biggest graduation loss, at quarterback, was filled with experience and talent by Eastside Catholic transfer Hixson. Bellevue's only apparent weakness is depth - an annual problem - with only about 50 players total in the program.

But if they stay healthy, the Wolverines are a strong contender for their first Kingbowl bid since winning the Class AAA title in 1983. -- COACH'S QUOTE - "We've never had a team with this much experience and size. It's exciting."

INTERLAKE -- 1991 RECORD - 1-4 in Crest (fifth), 2-7 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Bill Heglar, third season, 3-15 record. -- TOP RETURNERS - RB Omar Rich (sr., 5-7, 165), FB/LB Denny Kirkwood (sr., 5-11, 180), HB/LB Bryan Kirkwood (sr., 5-11, 180), TE Paul Ticen (sr., 6-2, 190), OG Nick Polier (sr., 6-1, 210), T Jason Cross (sr., 6-0, 220), SE Rob Roach (sr., 6-0, 165), T Mike Browne (sr., 6-2, 200), RB Quentin Thomas (sr., 5-7, 160), G Chris Hashiguchi (sr., 5-10, 19). -- KEY NEWCOMERS - DE Ramsey Villareal (jr., 6-2, 195), D Dominic Lanza (jr., 6-3, 235). -- OUTLOOK - A small line compared to other teams in league is nonetheless bigger than those of Interlake teams of recent past, and Heglar has had influx of speedy skill-position players this season. But this influx has created a disparity on varsity roster that now includes about 40 receivers and about 13 linemen. Other weaknesses are big hole to fill at quarterback with graduation of 1,000-yard passer Matt McPoland and enormous strength of half the division. Interlake no longer KingCo doormat. But no closer to playoffs. -- COACH'S QUOTE - "It's the best team we've had in three years. We have a little bit of size and defensive quickness. We have a chance, where to be quite honest, we didn't have a chance in past years."

ISSAQUAH -- 1991 RECORD -- 2-3 in Crest (fourth), 3-6 overall. -- HEAD COACH -- Cary Kodama, second season, 3-6 record. -- TOP RETURNERS - WR/FS Jeff Conlon (sr., 6-1, 185), RB/SS Matt Summers (sr., 5-10, 180), FB/NG Rob Coy (sr., 5-9, 185), TE/LB Mat Taylor (sr., 5-11, 175), OL/DL Brian Perron (sr., 5-11, 210), OL/DL Bobby Morgan (sr., 6-0, 190), WR/DB Brett Calapp (sr., 6-0, 170), WR/DB Jay Donaldson (sr., 5-9, 165). -- KEY NEWCOMERS - QB Shawen Dean (jr., 6-1, 170), RB/SS Eric Carvalho (jr., 5-8, 165), RB/LB Tony Aguero (so., 5-9, 170), OL/DL Mark Madeoy (so., 5-9, 170). -- OUTLOOK - The Indians return a strong core of skill-position players in all-leaguers Conlon, Summers and Coy. But there's little experience past that. Big question mark will be new QB starter Dean, an Issaquah basketball player who hasn't played football since Little League. The QB answer might be moot if questions about both lines and about the defense in general aren't answered early on. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're at least a week or two ahead of where we were last year at this point."

MERCER ISLAND -- 1991 RECORD - 4-1 in Crest (tied first), 5-4 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Dick Nicholl, 14th season, 77-44 record. -- TOP RETURNERS - DT/OT Jensen Allsop (sr., 6-1, 227), C Ryan Anderson (sr., 5-10, 170), ILB John Dolence (sr., 6-0, 164), G Jamie Greco (sr., 5-10, 230), QB/DB Matt Hale (sr., 5-11, 161), T Adam Roodman (jr., 6-0, 239), TE/OLB Gary Shavey (sr., 6-2, 200). -- KEY NEWCOMERS - WR Pete Baker (sr., 5-7, 149), RB/LB DelRoy McFarlane (sr., 5-11, 198), NG/OG Dustin Shigeno (sr., 5-10, 175), RB/LB Alex Wasserman (sr., 6-2, 172), WR/DB Chris Watson (sr., 5-7, 141), LB Ryan Kean (jr., 5-8, 160), TE/LB Keith Passe (jr., 6-2, 197), FB/LB Jeremy Curfew (jr., 5-10, 187). -- OUTLOOK - Islanders return the league's top quarterback (Hale), along with all-Crest players Allsop and Shavey. Offensive line and quarterback are biggest strength. Other skills positions look strong, too. But defense is inexperienced and must develop before back-to-back showdowns with Newport (Oct. 16) and Bellevue (Oct. 23). -- COACH'S COMMENT - "For us to be up there with Bellevue, we're going to have to play good defense this season, particularly against the rush."

NEWPORT -- 1991 RECORD - 4-1 in Crest (tied first), 8-3 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Dan Holden, first season. -- TOP RETURNERS - FB/DE Nate McAtee (sr., 6-5, 222), DT Jeff Fontaine (sr., 6-4, 249), LB Noel Burbridge (sr., 6-1, 219), LB Zeth Donahue (sr., 5-9, 167), LB Mike Kim (sr., 5-8, 173), DB Kevin Gregory (sr., 6-1, 162). -- KEY NEWCOMERS - QB Tom Wagner (jr., 6-0. 185), RB Chris Dixon (jr., 6-1, 182), HB Jason Mark (jr., 5-6, 159). -- OUTLOOK - Holden was an assistant coach in program for 22 years and made few changes in the system that has taken Newport to the playoffs the past three seasons. Newport might be closer to challenging Bellevue for Crest title than most think. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're ready to go. Let's tee it up."

SAMMAMISH -- 1991 RECORD - 0-5 in Crest (sixth), 2-7 overall. -- HEAD COACH - Don Papasedero, second season, 2-7 record. -- TOP RETURNERS - OL/DL Mark Lauren (sr., 6-2, 210), C/LB Tim Gauthun (jr., 5-10, 209), RB/LB Adam Heiner (sr., 6-1, 190), RB/LB Scott Pita (sr., 6-0, 185), WR/DB Jamie Pilkington (sr., 6-5, 205). -- KEY NEWCOMERS - QB Josh Brown (jr., 6-0, 165), LB Matt Morio (sr., 5-9, 175), LB Tim Kulinski (jr., 5-11, 197), WR Ryan Leopold (sr., 5-10, 150). -- OUTLOOK - Lauren and Gauthun return to line after all-Crest seasons, but Totems return only three other starters. Defense still is team's strength. So are receivers. And team generally should be improved in second season under Papasedero, but overall inexperience will make it tough to gain ground in strong division. -- COACH'S COMMENT - "We're green as can be. But they believe in themselves, and they're having a lot of fun."
