Pacers' Schrempf Says He Wants To Be Traded
-- BASKETBALL
Detlef Schrempf, four seasons into a 10-year deal, says he's tired of the Indiana Pacers taking advantage of him and wants a trade.
"I'm in my best years now. If I wait two or three years, it may be too late," Schrempf said yesterday. "I've been hearing (about reworking the contract) for two years. If there's a will, there's a way."
The 6-foot-10 forward from the University of Washington won the NBA's Sixth Man award the past two seasons, but the $1.2 million salary he's due to receive in 1992-93 is less than the salaries of teammates Reggie Miller, Chuck Person, LaSalle Thompson, Rik Smits and Micheal Williams.
General Manager Donnie Walsh said the Pacers would not trade Schrempf, who was third on the NBA team in scoring at 17.3 points per game and led the Pacers in rebounding (9.6) last season.
"He's got security and I don't feel we've been unreasonable," Walsh said. He acknowledged that Schrempf's value has increased, but so has Indiana's salary structure. The team is $4 million over the NBA cap.
