Seafair -- Topless Show On `Family Day'

Last Saturday (Aug. 1), "Family Day" at the Rainier Cup qualifying runs, my husband and I, along with our three children and two of their friends, took our boat out to the log boom and settled back to enjoy the air show and the hydroplanes.

We soon discovered that additional entertainment was being provided by several young ladies on nearby boats who were periodically removing their bathing suit tops and displaying their breasts to everyone within seeing distance. At last year's hydro races we saw this happen once, but this year it was continuous.

A few guys on a small skiff, traveling up and down the log boom holding a Seafair banner with the words "Show your t---" hand lettered on the reverse side got a big response from the gals on a large boat to the south of us. When the Budweiser boat came by passing out souvenirs, one of these same bimbos was apparently so overcome with gratitude upon receiving a plastic cup that she pulled down her top as a sort of thank you gesture. The boatloads of beer-drinking young males greeted each display with hoots, whistles, and yells for more.

Yes, it was quite a show. These women probably would have had a great time at the Tailhook convention. While at first the kids were too busy swimming or watching the air show to notice what was going on, it soon became obvious that the atmosphere was rapidly deteriorating and it was time to go. So, a lot sooner than we'd planned, we relinquished our hard-won spot on the log boom and left. In fact three other boats next to us with kids on board left at the same time.

We're really pretty laid-back people and like to have fun, but the scene at the log boom really was getting pretty disgusting by the time we left. We were angry that because of a few people who seemed to think they were in a topless bar instead of on Lake Washington, we were forced to leave a public event that should have been suitable for families. Hopefully Seafair officials can come up with a way of cleaning up the atmosphere in the log boom area as they have at Stan Sayers Park. In the meantime, even though watching the Blue Angels is one of the highlights of our children's summer, we will think long and hard before bringing them to the hydro races again. - Geri Sullivan, Renton
