Below are some services and programs available to Snohomish County residents who are developmentally disabled or physically challenged:
Advocates for the Rights of Citizens with Developmental Disabilities of Snohomish County (ARC), 258-2459. 2531 Wetmore Ave., Everett. Provides advocacy and trouble-shooting services for the developmentally disabled, including guidance for new parents, families and adults with mental retardation. Information and referral services. Assistance dealing with social and everyday problems, payeeships, food stamps, medical coupons, guardianship and finding low-cost housing. Also has recreational programs.
Banchero, 2335 N. 196th Pl., Bldg. 0, No. 106, Seattle. 367-7795. A non-profit organization that provides intensive tenant support for developmentally disabled people ages 19 to 25. Must be under the Department of Social and Health Services system. Helps independent living.
Children With Special Health Care Needs, Snohomish Health District, 3020 Rucker Ave., Suite 201, Everett. 339-5240. Serves children birth to 18 years who are physically challenged or learning disabled. Must meet financial guidelines. Federal- and state-funded case management program to assist children with special health-care needs.
Chrysalis Enterprises, 503 316th St. N.W., Stanwood. 252-5367 or 629-9008. A vocational program for developmentally disabled adults 18 and over. Contract assembly, mobile crews and job
placement. Provide individual and group job training.
Victoria Village, 503 316th St. N.W., Stanwood. 258-1094. 629-2172. Residential program for developmentally disabled adults. Counseling, speech therapy, activities. Must be referred by the state.
Coalition of Disabled Persons, 258-2253. Provides information and assistance to disabled persons and interested persons. Distributes applications for disabled parking permits. Offers a social group for disabled persons.
Community Services for the Blind and Partially Sighted, 9709 Third Ave. N.E., No. 100, Seattle. 525-5556 or 1-800-458-4888. A non-profit rehabilitation agency that provides training and support services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Counseling and rehabilitation programs. Helps independent living. Public education. Serves King, Snohomish and Skagit counties. Low-vision rehabilitation service provided at minimal cost. Other services are free.
Community Trades and Careers - 811 Madison Ave., Everett. 353-7521. Employment services and training for low-income, developmentally disabled and physically challenged adults 18 and over.
Counterpoint Council Inc., 7416 212th St. S.W., Edmonds. 778-2644. Developmental Disabilities Program. Psychological evaluations, monitoring and case management. Must be 18 or over and a resident of Snohomish County. Sliding fee and Medicare.
Custom Industries, 17405 68th St. N.E., Bothell. 486-9148. An employment training center for developmentally disabled adults. Packaging, small assembly, landscaping, janitorial and more. Also has placement services.
DART (Dial-A-Ride Transportation), Community Transit, 8905 Airport Road, Everett. 347-5912. Door-to-door transportation for seniors and disabled.
Deaf-Blind Service Center - 323-9178. 2366 Eastlake Ave. E., Suite 312, Seattle. Provides support to deaf-blind individuals 16 years or older and their families. Information and referrals, assistance accessing services, coordinated case management, support services.
Developmental Disabilities of Snohomish County, Human Services Department, 388-7200. 2722 Colby Ave., Suite 104, Everett. Provides coordination of and aids in the planning and development of programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. Provides information, referral services and community education on special problems, needs and capabilities of disabled persons and their families. Administers funding for a variety of community agencies servicing the developmentally disabled.
Diversified Industrial Services. Three locations in Everett, 355-1253. Serves developmentally disabled adults in Snohomish County. Provides vocational training and work opportunities. Janitorial, recycling, production shops, machining shops, wire shop, production shop, mobile crews and more.
Division of Developmental Disabilities, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. 339-4833.. 840 N. Broadway, Building A., Everett. Provides case management and resource management to people with developmental disabilities. Provides access to and monitoring of residential and other community programs. Eligibility includes mental retardation, autism, epilepsy, hearing and other conditions similar to mental retardation.
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, 672-2202 or 339-4880. 19000 33rd Ave. W., Lynnwood. A vocational rehabilitation program for disabled persons who have a physical or mental disability which causes a handicap to employment and a reasonable expectation of vocational benefit from services. Vocational evaluation, counseling, placement and follow up services. Independent Living Program for disabled persons who need assistance in housing, attendant care, counseling or advocacy. Eligibility: 16 and over (after public school) who have a physical or mental disability and live in Snohomish County.
Easter Seal Society of Washington, 281-5700 or 1-800-678-5708. - Helps people with disabilities achieve maximum independence. Equipment loan, housing assistance, home modification, information and referrals, education, recreation and camping and more. Call for details.
Epilepsy Association of Western Washington, 523-2551 or 1-800 752-3509 - 8511 15th Ave. N.E., Seattle. No fees. Advocacy for a variety of issues, access to social services, peer advocacy and support programs; self-help groups, parent programs; job counseling and training; community education seminars; information and referrals.
EquiFriends - 22610A Highway 2, Monroe. 794-5688. A non-profit group offers therapeutic horseback riding program for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.
Everett Transit - 259-8801. Senior and disabled van service for Everett residents unable to use regular transportation.
Friends of Special Children - Parents, foster parents, special ed teachers anyone interested in helping kids with disabilities. Support group and also has a summer camp program for severely involved children in Snohomish County. Meets every other month in Marysville in St. Phillip's Episcopal Church. Joan, 659-4263.
Gateway Family Support, Deaconess Children's Services, 353-8497 or 259-0146. 8015 S. Broadway, Everett. An intensive family support program for developmentally disabled parents. Must be referred from Department of Developmental Disabilities.
Head Start - A federally funded program for low-income children and handicapped children ages 3 to 5. Has four sites in Snohomish County. No fees. Preschool program. Provides child-development activities which encourage and support growth in physical, intellectual, social and emotional areas. Provides nutritional, medical and dental programs for enrolled children. Has parent education and involvement programs as well as social services for families. Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center, 18th Street and Madison Avenue, Seattle. 323-5770. Hearing test, hearing and speech therapy, independent living skills, parent-infant program, many other services, assisted device store.
Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped - 821 Lenora St., Seattle. 464-6930 or 1-800-542-0866. Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For anyone who cannot read standard print because of a physical disability includes people with reading disabilities. Material can be sent through the mail. Free.
LIFELINE - A personal emergency response device which allows handicapped, disabled or elderly people to live independently in their own homes. Emergency teams at General Hospital Medical Center in Everett are immediately notified if any medical emergency arises. Call General Hospital for more information. 258-6341.
Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center - 19802 N.E. 148th St., Woodinville, 882-1554. For children and adults with disabilities. Provides therapeutic horseback riding.
Little Red School House, 775-6070. Has schools in Lynnwood and Everett. Little Red School House is a private, non-profit, early-intervention program for developmentally delayed or disabled children under 3 years of age in Snohomish County. Curriculum stresses motor development, speech and language development, self-help and social skills and cognitive development. Children learn to be better prepared for the Special Education Programs in the public schools. The focus is on the total family. Both home and center-based treatment are offered. Insurance accepted.

March of Dimes, 624-1373 or 1-800-345-5188. Mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and related conditions. Research, education, advocacy and community services.
Mott Rehabilitation Services, 24007 Edmonds Way, Edmonds. 778-3707. Evaluation and case-management services for disabled. Sliding scale.
Muscular Dystrophy Association, 701 Dexter Ave. N., Suite 106, Seattle. 283-2106. A non-profit health agency aimed at conquering neuro-muscular diseases. Services include: patient care, support groups, research, kids' camp, public education, clinics, orthopedic equipment, rehabilitation, orthopedic, physical and respiratory therapy, social service referral and genetic counseling.
National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Western Washington Chapter, 728-1088 or 1-800-800-7047. 2328 Sixth Ave., Seattle. Services 18 counties, including Snohomish. Has information and referral, support and individual counseling, equipment loan program, aquatic programs, education series. Rehabilitation clinic located at the University of Washington. No fees.
Northwest Family Homes Inc., Three homes in Lynnwood and Everett. 774-4444. Care facilities for developmentally disabled adults 18 and over.
Northwest School for Hearing-Impaired Children - 364-4605, Seattle. Any hearing-impaired child who is not ready to function independently in a regular classroom setting is eligible. A complete academic program. Financial aid available.
Polio - A polio support group meets the second Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. in the board room of Providence Hospital, 916 Pacific Ave., Everett. 355-4249.
Providence Hospital Children's Center, 258-7311. 4526 Federal Ave., Everett. Eligibility: birth to 18 years of age; children in Snohomish County with questionable developmental delays or suspected neurological impairment. Multiple funding sources are available. Evaluation and intervention considers medical, psycho-social, development and educational issues.
Resource Center for the Handicapped, 20150 45th Ave. N.E., Seattle. 362-2273. A vocational training institute. Serves people with physical disabilities. Computer programming, electronics, computer-aided design, word processing, customer service training. Dorm facility available. Accredited by the Department of Education. State aid available. Eligible: Adults who are physically disabled, must have a high school diploma.

SHHH (Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People), meets the third Monday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, 1512 N.W. 195th St. Rosemary, 776-0535.
Sherwood Learning Center: 334-4071. 401 91st Ave. N.E., Everett. Provides home-based early intervention services for infants and toddlers from birth to three years in Snohomish County who are developmentally delayed or disabled. Integrated child care. Therapy services.
Sherwood Enterprises: 334-4071. 401 91st Ave. N.E., Everett. Provides vocational training and employment to developmentally disabled adults over 21 in Snohomish County. Specialized industry, individual placement and mobile crew employment for adults.
Snohomish County Center for the Handicapped, (Marvel Industries), 2931 36th St. Everett. 339-2676. A lumber mill that hires developmentally disabled or physically challenged and works to get them a job on the outside. Must be 18 or over.
Snohomish Health District, Children with Special Health Care Needs, 3020 Rucker Ave., Everett. 339-5240. Provides funds for physically challenged or developmentally disabled children. Sliding scale. Birth to 18 years.
Snohomish County Special Olympics - Year-round training and athletic competition for mentally disabled individuals ages 9 and older. Swimming, soccer, bowling, track and field. 337-5545.
United Cerebral Palsy of King-Snohomish Counties - 4409 Interlake Ave. N., Seattle. 632-2827 - Advocacy, information, referrals, residential services, dental clinic, transportation. Provides a complete rehabilitation center for those with multiple handicaps (developmental disabilities). Must be referred from an agency such as DSHS and must be 18 or older.
