Bear Kills 6-Year-Old; Is Second Fatal Attack

ANCHORAGE

A 6-year-old boy was dragged off and killed by a brown bear early yesterday in Alaska's second fatal bear attack in 48 hours.

Authorities said the consecutive maulings in separate parts of the state were "unheard of."

Antone Bear of False Pass was killed as he walked with his mother and a younger sister into the fishing village of King Cove, about 650 miles southwest of Anchorage.

On Wednesday, a Fort Lewis woman, Darcy Staver, was killed by a black bear that pursued her after she and her husband climbed to the roof of their lakeside cabin about 150 miles east of Anchorage.
