School Board May Be Sued Over Decision On Condoms
KIRKLAND
Angry parents are threatening to sue the Lake Washington School Board over its decision to teach students how to use condoms.
Tom Barkume, who has two children in the district, said unless the district offers a parallel "abstinence curriculum," he will sue, alleging that a school-sponsored survey of community opinion on the issue was improperly done.
Barkume said another parent is exploring a recall of the board members who voted for the condom instruction.
Board member Sanford Brown, who voted for the measure, was surprised at the reaction. "We could be the first school board in the nation to take a stand against condom distribution and get sued anyway." Brown said the instruction might take a full school year to
implement.
