`Phil Weyerhaeuser, Grandson Of Founder

John Philip Weyerhaeuser III, one of the grandsons of the Weyerhaeuser Co.'s founder, died earlier this month at the age of 66.

Known as "Phil," Mr. Weyerhaeuser served in a variety of management positions with the forest-products giant before his retirement in 1974. He assumed a lower profile than his brother George, chief executive of the firm.

Mr. Weyerhaeuser died April 1.

A memorial service is scheduled at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Church on the Prairie, 6310 Motor Ave. S.W. in Tacoma.

Mr. Weyerhaeuser was born April 7, 1925, in Spokane. He attended the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., and earned a bachelor's degree in 1949 from Yale University.

He was a director of Weyerhaeuser, and also of the Northwest Paper Co., Southern Lumber Co., Commerce Savings and Loan in Tacoma and Thousand Trails Inc. in Tacoma.

He was a member of the Tucson National Golf and Country Club and the Tacoma Club.

Besides his brother, George, he is survived by his wife, Clara; two sisters, Ann Pascoe of Seattle and Elizabeth Meadowcroft of Tacoma; a son, John Philip IV of New Bern, N.C.; daughters Lisa of Phoenix and Jane of Los Angeles; and three grandsons.
