Cody's Eighth St. Grill (11021 N.E. Eighth St., 455-4535) - Formerly Charlie's, Roxie's and Charlie's, it's now Cody's - as in Wayne. The hottest night is for Club 107, the Saturday night infusion from the alternative FM station, KNDD. Here the music isn't THAT alternative, but it takes chances. Radio DJ Bryan Jones is a wise guy, the crowd is very young and polite and it works. Wednesday through Sunday. No cover on Thursday.

Crossroads Square Cow Funbar (1411 156th Ave. N.E., 746-1663) - The Black Angus gone bovine disco. That would be country. Mixed crowd. Nightly, no cover.

Mostly slick soul music and Top 40 covers played by always competent bands for a mid-20s to 30s crowd with a few traveling salesmen tossed in. Never too loud. Nice surroundings. DaVinci's (89 Kirkland Ave., 889-9000) - Little itsy-bitsy dance floor and everyone tries to get on it. Loud, noisy, brash. It's well liked. Cover Friday and Saturday. Also karoake Wednesday and Thursday. No cover for that.

Waldo's (12657 N.E. 85th St., 827-9292) - If there's a bastion - a last bastion - of roadhouse rock 'n' roll anywhere on the Eastside, this is probably it. An iron heart-and-lungs ambiance for as long as anyone still can remember. Friday and Saturdays, Cover.

Pete's Club (Tolt Ave., Carnation; 333-4140) - Basic rock in cow country Friday and Saturday nights. Pete's is conveniently located across the street from the police station, but no one seems to take much notice.

Reunion Tavern (21 Front St., Issaquah; 391-3092) - Grateful Dead night every Thursday. For recorded music, this gets really lively. Some nights it spills out the door and onto the streets. And that's in the winter! No cover. Bring your favorite Dead tapes.
