Nebraska Player Arrested In Attack
LINCOLN, Neb. - A Nebraska football player was arrested last night after an incident in which a 23-year-old woman was severely beaten, police said.
Running back Scott Baldwin, 22, was arrested in front of an apartment where the incident took place, according to police.
The woman was in critical condition at Lincoln General Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
Police and witnesses said the woman was walking her dog in front of the apartments late yesterday afternoon when she was attacked by a man who was not wearing any clothes.
Baldwin, a junior from Roselle, N.J., was booked on suspicion of felony assault and assaulting a police officer, Rowe said.
Police said the suspect also smashed the windshield of a car parked near the apartments.
KUBIAK HIRED AT A&M -- COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Gary Kubiak, John Elway's backup quarterback on the Denver Broncos, was named assistant football coach at Texas A&M, his alma mater.
"I plan to change our offense to more of a pro-style attack and Gary's background should be helpful as we move in that direction," Coach R.C. Slocum said.
Kubiak, 30, just completed his ninth season as Elway's backup. In his final appearance, in which the Broncos lost 10-7 to Buffalo in the AFC championship game, Kubiak spelled an injured Elway and completed 11 of 12 passes for 136 yards and scored the game's only offensive touchdown. He retired after the game.
"I've known for quite some time I wanted to become a football coach when my playing days were finished," Kubiak said.
Denver Coach Dan Reeves had said this season that Kubiak would make a good coach.
"He's almost like an assistant coach and has been for five, six years," Reeves said during the NFL season.
Kubiak set numerous records in his career at Texas A&M from 1979-82.
