Abes' Milloy Rated Among `Best In West'

Lawyer Milloy of Tacoma's Lincoln High School is the only football player from the state of Washington to make this year's "Best in the West" list of top football recruits.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram annually compiles the list based on the votes of 10 major-college talent evaluators. The evaluators vote on which athletes they think can become impact players by the sophomore season.

This year, 26 athletes got the required six votes to make the list. Honorable-mention status requires at least two votes.

Milloy is a running-back-defensive back who is considering Washington, Notre Dame, UCLA, California and Miami. Nine other "Best in the West" athletes are considering Washington.

The Huskies have commitments from four honorable-mention athletes: Jason Shelley, wide receiver-defensive back from Vallejo, Calif.; Theron Hill, running back, Carson, Calif.; linebacker David Richie, Kelso, and lineman Lynn Johnson, Mount Rainier of Des Moines.

Last year, three state athletes made the "Best in the West" list: quarterback Damon Huard of Puyallup, linebacker Jeff Bockert of Prairie High School near Vancouver and tight end Mark Bruener of Aberdeen. They were among five Husky 1991 "Best in the West" recruits in a class led by Napoleon Kaufman of Lompoc, Calif., who received a perfect score of 10 votes. The other Husky recruit on the 1991 "Best" list was linebacker Steve Hoffmann.

Two of the three athletes rated "10" this year are considering Washington. They are Cedric White, a defensive lineman from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles and Amani Toomer, a wide receiver from De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. Another "10" defensive lineman from Dorsey High, Dwayne Sanders, is considering Washington State.
