Hazen Shuts Out Roosevelt In Playoff -- Shorecrest Is Next Foe
The only scoring came during the second half as Hazen defeated Roosevelt 2-0 yesterday in a Class AA girls soccer first-round state playoff game.
Trisha Schmidt scored on a direct kick 27 minutes into the second half and Farah Wilcox tallied with about 15 minutes left, while Katie Ahl notched her 13th shutout. The junior made three saves.
"Overall we played an OK game," said Hazen Coach Mick Rider. "It wasn't one of our better games. We didn't completely outplay them."
Hazen outshot Roosevelt 20-4 to push its record to 15-0-1. Hazen will play Shorecrest in the quarterfinals this weekend.
-- Shorecrest 3, Burlington 0 - Shorecrest had an easier time getting into the Burlington-Edison goal than it did getting out of Burlington.
The Scots, 3-0 victors in the game, needed a police escort after a riot broke out between Burlington fans and the Shorecrest Spirit Squad.
"We were going though the handshake after the game and one of their players kicked Erin Mayovsky," Shorecrest Coach Teddy Mitalas said. "She was right in front of me and she just turned around and kicked her. The referee came over and gave her a red card, but what good is that going to do? Their season is over."
Mayovsky set up all three Shorecrest goals, the first on a nice crossing pass to Laura Olson, who headed the tipped ball past the Burlington goaltender.
Mayovsky fed Mindy Falor and Eva Farkas for the two other Shorecrest goals as the Scots outshot Burlington 22-3.
"Erin Mayovsky played a tremendous game," Mitalas said. "I had Erin and Amber Kennedy both playing forwards and they were great together."
The Tigers first shot of the game got underneath goaltender Jessica Roney, but glanced off a goal post for Burlington's biggest threat.
Shorecrest is 16-0-1.
Mitalas said his players were in the locker room showering when the police arrived and told him they would escort the team bus out of town.
"They told me there had been a riot outside of the stadium," Mitalas said.
"Our Spirit Squad is really loud and they paint their faces and support the girls soccer team real well. But we don't allow them to yell obscenities, and they left nicely.
"What shocked me was that it had been a great game."
-- Kennedy 5, Tumwater 2 - Kennedy, which had been struggling offensively, broke the slump as Christina Hernandez and Angie Bourgette each scored twice.
Michelle French added a goal as Kennedy (12-3-3) advanced to this weekend's quarterfinals.
"I'm really happy with the way we played," Kennedy Coach Doug Stamnes. "We haven't been scoring a whole lot of goals lately, so I'm happy with that."
-- Fife 3, Lakeside 2 SO - Freshman goalkeeper Leah Campbell, a first-half replacement for injured starter Shannon Short, came up with some timely saves to lead Fife to the overtime shootout win over Lakeside in the first round of the Class AA tournament at Puyallap.
Fife, 15-1-1 and the Pierce County League champion, will play Kennedy in the second round.
