Larsen's 18 Kills Lead UW Volleyball

TUCSON, Ariz. - Kelley Larsen made 18 kills to lead Washington to a four-game victory over Arizona last night in a Pac-10 volleyball match.

Tiffany Ringgold and Ashleigh Robertson each had 15 kills as UW won 16-14, 15-9, 5-15, 16-14, to run its record to 3-6 in the conference, 12-8 overall. Arizona is 0-9, 3-15.

-- WASHINGTON STATE 3, AT ARIZONA STATE 1 - Setter Keri Killebrew logged 11 kills and had no errors in 25 hitting attempts, leading Washington State past Arizona State 3-1 in a Pac-10 volleyball match. WSU (6-3, 19-6) beat the Wildcats 15-7, 4-15, 15-8, 15-11.

Cougar Kelly Hankins had 24 kills, four errors in 52 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage. -- PUGET SOUND INVITATIONAL - Portland State University won the Puget Sound Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Tacoma by sweeping Western Washington.

Led by tournament most-valuable player Leanne Peters, PSU breezed through pool play with a 3-0 record. Western also entered the title match undefeated but fell to PSU 15-7, 15-7, 15-4. -- PLU SPLITS - The Lutes beat Whitworth 15-8, 15-4, 16-14 behind Kristi Weedon's 12 kills Friday, but Lewis & Clark State visited Memorial Gym yesterday and won 15-9, 15-12, 15-6, despite Kary Wang's 14 kills. PLU dropped to 6-19.

OREGON RUNS TO TITLES -- EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon's highly ranked men's and women's cross-country teams won their respective races and Washington finished second in the women's 5,000-meter event yesterday at the

Jeff Drenth Memorial cross-country meet at Alton Baker Park.

The No. 2 Oregon men edged Club Northwest 55-58. No. 16 Dartmouth edged No. 17 Washington for third by two points.

Oregon International's club competitor Karl Van Calcar won the men's 8,000-meter race in 24:06. Senior Greg Metcalf was the top Husky, placing sixth in 24:33.

Carrie Moller, in 17:34, was fifth for the UW women, who had 60 points. -- Cathrine Linnes took top individual honors and Washington State's women's team won the North Idaho College Invitational at Hayden Lake. -- In Estacada, Ore., PLU's Alan Herr and Patty Ley set course records in leading the Lutes to the NCIC Championship titles, their eighth and 11th, respectively. Ley's time of 16:51.2 on the 5,000-meter course also shattered former Lute Kristy Purdy's 1981 NCIC record of 17:27.3. -- John Wright and his school, George Fox College, won the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham. Sandra Guidotti and her team, Club Northwest, won the women's titles.

WSU WOMEN TOP SU -- Amy Wilson and Kim Lynass each scored first-half goals and goalkeeper Natalie McDowell logged WSU's third consecutive shutout as the Cougars (9-4-1) beat the Chieftains 3-0 in a women's soccer game at Seattle University. -- PACIFIC LUTHERAN 5, AT PACIFIC 2 - Sophomore forward Jeff Ellis scored three goals to power PLU (4-0, 8-5-1) to the NCIC victory in Forest Grove, Ore. -- AT PLU 3, WHITMAN 1 - Wendy Johnson scored two goals and Cheryl Kragness had two assists to lead the Lutes (6-0-1 NAIA, 8-1-3). -- AT WESTERN 1, BRITISH COLUMBIA 1 - Stephanie Siebert scored and Western (7-2-3), ranked fifth in the national NAIA poll, held on for the tie.
