Pazienza Beats Dele To Collect Another Ring Title

Vinny Pazienza stopped champion Gilbert Dele in the 12th round last night to take the Frenchman's WBA junior middleweight championship in Providence, R.I.

In claiming his second world title, Pazienza handed Dele his first defeat in 31 professional fights. Pazienza (31-5), a former IBF lightweight champion, also holds the U.S. Boxing Association junior middleweight crown.

-- A 26-year-old Los Angeles woman who says Mike Tyson fathered her child filed a $12 million palimony and paternity lawsuit against the heavyweight boxer and Don King, claiming Tyson backed out of the relationship at the promoter's urging.

-- Britain's Michael Watson is showing signs of regaining consciousness, 11 days after suffering a brain injury in a world title fight, hospital officials in London said today.

-- TENNIS

Three-time champion Ivan Lendl rallied from the brink of defeat and beat American Scott Davis 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 in the second round of Australian Indoor championship in Sydney. Davis served for the match at 5-4 in the final set, but Lendl reeled off three straight games to win the match.

Stefan Edberg, the U.S. Open champion, had no such problems, cruising to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over fellow Swede Peter Lundgren.

Running back Jamal Farmer, No. 3 on Hawaii's all-time rushing-yardage list, left the team, citing differences with the coaching staff.

-- E.E. "Rip" Miller, one of the Seven Mules who paved the way for the Four Horsemen on Knute Rockne's legendary Notre Dame teams of the mid-1920s, died in Annapolis, Md. He was 90.

-- An autopsy revealed that Texas A&M's James Glenn, a walk-on kicker who collapsed and died before a practice last week, had an enlarged heart.

The NBA's Washington Bullets signed guard David Wingate, who was released in June by the San Antonio Spurs.

The Edmonton Oilers made a couple of deals today, sending disgruntled defenseman Steve Smith to the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Dave Manson and a draft choice and swapping veteran center Kenny Linseman to the Toronto Maple Leafs for future considerations.

-- Goaltender Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers was suspended for six games for a slashing incident with Detroit's Jim Cummins in a Sept. 22 NHL exhibition game.

-- Quebec Nordiques president Marcel Aubut has lodged a complaint with the NHL over tampering with top draft pick Eric Lindros, a club spokesman said. The Nordiques believe as many as six teams tampered with the No. 1 draft choice by contacting his family or his agent, Rick Curran.

Discus thrower Russ Willitt of Battle Creek, Mich., was suspended from competition for two years because he failed to report for a drug test, The Athletics Congress announced.
