Woman Crushed To Death By Elevator

ANCHORAGE, Alaska

A 62-year-old woman was crushed to death yesterday in an elevator between floors of the J.C. Penney Co. parking garage.

"It appears that none of the buttons worked," Anchorage police Lt. Bill Gaither said. "The elevator moved by itself."

The unidentified woman was the last person to step inside when the elevator started moving and she slipped and fell, with her upper body in the elevator and her lower body hanging out as the car continued to go up, Gaither said. "The people in the elevator then started frantically pushing buttons and nothing seemed to work," he said. "They then pushed the emergency button and the elevator

stopped."
