Woman Jumps Off Ferry Dock For Dog

EDMONDS

A woman walking her dog at the Edmonds ferry dock early today ended up missing the boat when both jumped into Puget Sound.

Gloria Beltran, 33, was waiting for the 8 a.m. ferry to Kingston and let her young Chinese Shar-Pei run around the dock, but it jumped into the water. The owner promptly jumped in after the dog, witnesses said.

Another ferry passenger alerted ferry ticket-seller Daryl Motes, who threw Beltran a life ring and directed her to a ladder to climb out after about five minutes in the water.

"She didn't want to let go of that dog," said Motes. "It was just a little pup."

An aid crew found both owner and dog to be doing fine. Beltran maneuvered her car out of the ferry line and went home to dry off, Motes said.
