Family Portrait -- The Donohue Family

-- The family: Jim Donohue, 40, Tanya Donohue, 40, their son Michael, 10, and daughter Meghan, 8. -- What they do: Jim is this year's president of Seafair. He is a partner with the law firm Miller, Nash, Wiener, Hager and Carlsen. Tanya is a systems analyst at Group Health. -- Their involvement with Seafair: As president, Jim has helped other families in need. Last month he introduced the Walk in the Park, which raised $35,000 for homeless families in Seattle. Michael plans to enter the milk-carton derby this year, and Meghan is looking forward to blowing kisses from a horse-drawn carriage in the Torchlight Parade. Although their family life can be hectic, Tanya says, "I give my time by being with my family so Jim can do community work. Any marriage has to be a team effort." -- Their first encounter with Seafair: Jim and Tanya first came to Seattle in 1976 on the day of the hydroplane races. "We got into town and it was deserted," Tanya says. "We went into a drugstore, and they asked us who won the races. We said, `What races?' We didn't know what they were talking about." -- A favorite Seafair memory: Jim remembers pushing nine-month-old Meghan in the Magnolia Children's Parade. With them was 2-year-old Michael, dressed as a circus strong man. "Tanya is very creative," Jim says. "She dressed Michael in yellow cloth with black spots like a leopard and drew hair on his chest. She also made a papier-mache barbell labeled `100 lbs.' " Says Tanya, "Michael was proud of those chest hairs, and went around showing off to the little girls." -- Other activities: Tanya and Jim enjoy walking with their children as they roller skate around Green Lake. The Donohues also like going to baseball games. "Doing ordinary things together as a family makes it special," Tanya says. Because Jim is Catholic and Tanya is Methodist, the family spends alternate Sundays at St. Patrick's Church on Capitol Hill and the Magnolia Methodist Church. While they will still plan to help out at Seafair next year, Jim says his family also would like to participate in Habitat for Humanity, a volunteer organization that builds low-income housing.
