Ruling In Divorce Case Leaves Gastineau Without Assets
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - Former NFL All-Pro Mark Gastineau has been left without any assets after a judge sacked him for 85 weeks of back child support and other payments in finalizing his stormy 4 1/2-year divorce case.
Lisa Gastineau, 31, was granted the divorce on the grounds of "cruel and inhuman treatment" by her husband. In addition, a judge ruled she was entitled to a portion of the $500,000 the former defensive end forfeited when he quit the New York Jets in mid-season in 1988.
The decision ends a battle that began in 1986 when Lisa Gastineau filed to end the couple's seven-year marriage.
Lisa Gastineau was awarded the couple's Huntington home, presently valued at $430,000, in satisfaction for the unearned money and 85 weeks of arrearages on mortgage payments, maintenance and child support.
In addition, Lisa Gastineau is entitled to $18,500 a year in combined maintenance for herself and child support for their 7-year-old daughter.
Acting Supreme Court Justice H. Patrick Leis issued the decision June 21.
"Lisa is a bit disappointed with the settlement, but we got all we could," said Larry Schatz, Mrs. Gastineau's attorney, before landing a few solid verbal shots on the one-time sack dancer.
"He has been extremely un-cooperative, and very arrogant," Schatz said of Gastineau. The divorce settlement basically leaves Gastineau, who was earning almost $800,000 a year with the Jets, with no assets.
He was awarded the couple's $500,000 house in Scottsdale, Ariz. But there is virtually no equity in the house, and it is expected to be foreclosed on soon.
Gastineau, 34, earned only $20,000 over the past three years in the Canadian Football League and his boxing career.
