Samory German To Attend U.S. Naval Academy

Samory German, student body president at Franklin High School and a starter on the Quakers' basketball team, has been accepted at the United States Naval Academy.

He is believed to be the first Franklin student to be accepted at the Naval Academy.

German, 6 feet 7 inches and 240 pounds, has been recruited to play strong forward for the Midshipmen.

He will join another area athlete, Hazen High School's Manoleto "Monty" Williams, at the Naval Academy. Williams, 5-11 and 195 pounds, was an all-Seamount League running back and track sprinter at Hazen. He will play football at the Naval Academy.

Satoshi Fujii, a Metro AA League all-star lineman at Ballard High School, will attend Columbia University in New York this fall. A 6-foot, 250-pounder, Fujii is expected to play nose tackle for the Lions, although he will have to be content with playing for the Columbia freshman team this fall since the Ivy League does not allow freshman to play varsity sports.

HIGHLINE TABS WRIGHT

-- Keith Wright had given up hope of landing a full-time teaching job in the area, gave up his house and was preparing to return to Texas.

Now he's the new head boys basketball coach at Highline High School.

Wright, 34, was hired this week to replace Jim Robeck as the boys basketball coach at Highline.

Robeck, 58, who coached the Pirates for 18 seasons, retired after last season but will continue to teach at Highline.

"I was one step away from going back to Texas," Wright said last night. "Right now I'd probably be halfway back to Texas.

"Being a daddy has changed my outlook and given me new responsibilities, but we had given up hope of finding a full-time teaching job around here.

"I had some contacts down there (Texas) I had worked with. I was pretty confident I could have landed a job down there.

"But we're real thankful things panned out here."

Wright and his wife Carla have a 3-month-old daughter. Now he's busy trying to find housing again.
