Austrian Ski Star Nierlich Is Killed In Auto Accident

Austrian star Rudolf Nierlich, winner of three World Championships, was killed in an autombile accident near his home in Vienna, Austria, yesterday. He was 25.
Nierlich's car skidded on a rain-drenched road and slammed into a restaurant, the Austria Press Agency reported. He died on the way to the hospital.
Nierlich won the giant slalom at this year's World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. He captured both the slalom and the giant slalom at the World Championships in Vail, Colo., in 1989.

Responding to angry hunters, the state Wildlife Commission voted unanimously to restore two weeks to the pheasant season in Eastern Washington.
The season will end Dec. 31 in 1991, 1992 and 1993. It begins on mid-October dates for each of those years. The season had been cut back March 9 on a vote by the commission.

Alberto Mancini of Argentina beat Spain's Sergi Bruguera 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Italian Open after Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Yugoslavia's Goran Prpic 6-4, 6-2.
-- Jennifer Capriati beat Julie Halard of France 6-3, 6-2 and moved into the semifinals of the Lufthansa Cup in Berlin. Capriati, seeded seventh, next will face fifth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, who easily defeated Anke Huber of Germany 6-0, 6-2. Top-seeded Steffi Graf defeated Czechoslovak Radka Zrubakova 6-3, 6-2.

Bryan Goebel captured his second career PBA title with a
224-195 win over Mark Williams in the title match of the $145,000 Kessler Classic in Riverside, Calif.
To get to the title match the second-seeded Goebel defeated PBA Hall of Famer Marshall Holman 222-199.
-- RUNNING
Elana Meyer set a world record in the women's half-marathon in South Africa, slashing more than a half-minute off the old record with a clocking of 67 minutes 59 seconds. Meyer broke the 68:31 record set in March 1989 by Norwegian Ingrid Kristiansen.
But, since South Africa has been barred from world competition because of its racial policy, records set by South African athletes have not been recognized internationally.

Jon Horton caught eight passes, including a 30-yard touchdown throw, and Stan Gelbaugh threw for 325 yards as the London Monarchs defeated the Sacramento Surge 45-21 in the WLAF. The Monarchs (9-0) clinched the league's first playoff slot.

Defender Des Walker headed the ball into his net in overtime to give Tottenham a record eighth English Football Association Cup championship, 2-1 over Nottingham Forest. The final was watched from the stands by Prince Charles and Princess Diana and on TV by an estimated 600 million people.

Canadian Steve Bauer won his second sprint finish and Norway's Atle Kvalsvoll added two seconds to his overall lead in the 10th stage of the Tour Du Pont race.
-- SOFTBALL
In Columbia, Mo., Nanea Cambra's three-run home run in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie, giving Hawaii-Loa (37-6) a 5-1 victory over Puget Sound for its first NAIA National Women's championship. The Lady Loggers of Tacoma (22-4) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Tara Brown's RBI single.
-- Twelve teams will compete in the 20th annual Chissus Memorial fastpitch tournament next weekend at Renton's Liberty Park. Opening games are at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
