Lw's Marshall Blazes; Garfield Girls Win Title

BELLEVUE - Lake Washington's Danielle Marshall took a page from her scrap book Thursday night and took a long look at the newspaper photograph of herself winning the 100-meter dash in last year's state track meet.

Then she took 11.8 seconds to add a page to the Sea-King District AAA record book yesterday at Sammamish Stadium.

"I looked at my form in that picture and said, `There are some things I need to change,' " Marshall said. "I think I did. I feel a lot stronger this year."

Marshall's victory 11.8 seconds in the 100 meters bettered by two-hundredths of a second the Sea-King record set last year by Stacy Sparks of Sammamish and bettered her own state-best in the event.

Sparks finished second to Marshall in the 100 yesterday but established a state best in the 200 (24.7 electronic, or 24.5 hand-timed) to beat Marshall for the district 200 championship.

KingCo Conference champion Sammamish, the defending state girls champion, also got victories from Tiffany Paup, who took titles in both hurdles events, and Kelsey Stellick, who won her second straight javelin title.

But it wasn't enough to overcome Metro League champ Garfield, which won the Sea-King girls title behind victories in the triple jump (Kim Burton, 35 feet, 2 1/2 inches), the 400-meter relay (49.53), and the 800 relay (1:45.11). Sammamish finished second.

"We went out with a bang," said Garfield's Chundrea Nicholson, who took third in the 100 hurdles and anchored the Bulldogs' relay victories. "Now we'll be AA, but we went out with a bang."

In the boys competition, Juanita and Redmond finished the day tied for first with 69 points apiece and one event to go. The pole vault was rained out and rescheduled for Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Sammamish.
