Torre's Wife Hit By Bat

-- ATLANTA - Alice Torre, wife of St. Louis Cardinals Manager Joe Torre, was struck in the head by a bat in the second inning of the Cardinals' game against Atlanta last night.

She was seated in the front row of a box next to the Cardinals' dugout when the bat slipped out of Braves hitter Mike Heath's hand on a swinging third strike and sailed into the seats. She was reported in good condition after being taken to a hospital for stitches to her head.

Notes

-- First baseman Wally Joyner is leaving hints this may be his last season with the California Angels. While recording promotional announcements for KMPC, the radio station which broadcasts Angel games, Joyner didn't use the usual "Three, two, one" countdown - before beginning the message to be aired.

Instead, his introduction was: "This is Wally Joyner and you can use these IDs until I become a free agent. Not to be used after Oct. 25." The date apparently coincides with baseball's free-agency filing period. -- Mike Flanagan will take Jeff Robinson's place in the Orioles' rotation and pitch against Oakland today. Flanagan has not started a game since early last season. He has a 1.50 earned-run average coming out of the Baltimore bullpen. -- A New York jury resumed deliberating today to determine if gambler Howard Spira tried to extort money from George Steinbrenner.

-- Cedric Tallis, who ran the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees during a 43-year career in pro baseball, died yesterday in Tampa, Fla., after a heart attack. He was 76.

-- Detroit waived infielder Tony Bernazard. Outfielder Lloyd Moseby was to come off the disabled list today.
