WSU Sprinter Ogbeide Breaks Record In 100

PULLMAN - Washington State's George Ogbeide set a track record of 10.27 seconds for the 100-meter dash in a college track and field meet against Oregon and Idaho yesterday.

Ogbeide, a sprinter from Nigeria, broke the Mooberry Track 100-meter record of 10.32 seconds, set in 1984 by Lee Gordon of WSU. Ogbeide also won the long jump at 24 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

Samuel Kibiri of WSU was a double winner, in the 5,000 and 1,500.

In men's competition, WSU beat Oregon 111-52 and Idaho 136-16. Oregon beat Idaho 129-29. In the women's meet, Oregon defeated Idaho 106-26 and WSU 79-57. WSU beat Idaho 101-30.

HUSKY RUNNER QUALIFIES -- STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Dwight Wheaton reached the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 800-meter race and was one of nine University of Washington winners in the Stanford Collegiate Track and Field Open.

Wheaton, from Evergreen High School, ran the 800 in 1 minute, 48.72 seconds. Teammate Mitch Leffler was second in 1:50.16. Wheaton eclipsed the provisonal mark by 0.48 of a second, putting him among the pool of individuals who are eligible for the NCAA championship meet if automatic qualifiers don't fill the field in his event.

UW GOLFERS MOVE UP -- STANFORD, Calif. - Mike Swingle shot a 2-under-par 69 during the second round and Mike Seek shot an even-par 71, lifting Washington from 16th to 12th place going into today's final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate tournament.

Washington has a two-day total of 597. Arizona leads with a 576, followed by Southern Cal and North Carolina tied at 587.

Swingle's 69 was the second lowest round of the tournament and was 18 strokes better than his first-round total of 87. Seek is the top UW individual, in 26th with a 6-over-par 148. UW senior O.D. Vincent is tied for 29th, one shot behind Seek at 149.

SPU RUNNER SETS RECORD -- TACOMA - Seattle Pacific University's Ted Hamlin broke a 24-year-old meet and stadium record in winning the 800-meter run at the Shotwell Invitational track meet.

Hamlin, a junior from Boise, won his third race in four weeks in 1 minute, 50.6 seconds. It was also the second-best time in SPU history. The old meet and University of Puget Sound stadium record of 1:52.0 was set by Washington's Dave Roberts in 1967.
