Company Orders Recall After Pcp Found In Milk

PASADENA, Calif. - Nestle has recalled its La Lechera sweetened, condensed milk after a can contaminated with the hallucinogenic drug PCP sent a family to the hospital.

Nestle USA Inc. said it ordered the national recall yesterday of all of the product - about 480,000 cans - as a precaution.

Spokesman Dick Curd said there were no other known instances of illness or threats against the company.

Two of the victims, an unidentified 3-year-old and his 7-month-old sister, were released from the hospital yesterday after a five-day stay, authorities said. The children's mother and grandmother also received hospital treatment.

Authorities ruled out the possibility the family was involved in the sale or use of the drug, and don't know how the milk was contaminated, said Laurie Cottrell, a spokeswoman for the city of Pasadena. She said there were no visible signs of tampering.

Curd said the milk is distributed nationally, especially in cities with large Hispanic populations. The can's label is in English and Spanish. Only one U.S. plant produces the milk, but Curd said he was not sure of the site.
