Star Times

Star Times players are selected by Seattle Times sports writers and

editors covering high-school basketball. Players are picked from schools

in King and Snohomish counties - primarily Metro, KingCo, Western and

Seamount leagues, plus King County schools in the South Puget Sound,

Pierce County, Cascade, Nisqually and Sea-Tac leagues.

The buzzing question about this year's Star Times selections: What if you had these players on one team?

The 1990-91 Star Times basketball team truly can be called the best of the best. In this unusually abundant season of basketball talent, the pickings were plentiful. Many of the candidates will play for NCAA Division I colleges next season. But 10 players - five boys and five girls - stood out.

It has been argued that the boys - Newport's Mark Pope, Federal Way's Donny Marshall, Garfield's Bryant Boston and LeNard Jones, and Kent-Meridian's K.J. Roberts - could beat the starting five of some Division I college teams.

There were dozens of others to choose from, players who would make almost any all-star team. Last year, the Star Times team consisted of eight players. This year, only five of the very best were honored.

``It makes it more special, more selective,'' said Newport Coach Richard Belcher, 1990 boys coach of the year.

The girls team is comprised of Auburn's Behka Stafford, Mercer

Island's Dena Dey, Franklin's Rhonda Smith and two players from Redmond, Gina Estep and Alison Landvatter.

Arguably not as polished as the boys team, the girls team still is one to be remembered.

``The level of athleticism is much higher,'' Redmond Coach Jeannine Ewing said. ``I'm real impressed with the mobility and speed of this group.''

The coaches of the year, Interlake's Jeff Bright and Bothell's Terry Galloway, had teams that lost in the district playoffs after enjoying turnaround seasons.

Bright's Interlake boys finished 17-8, including seven losses to teams now ranked among the state's top five. Interlake upset Mercer Island during the regular season and lost to top-ranked Garfield by only two points in the district playoffs. Interlake was eliminated by Mercer Island last Tuesday.

Before Bright, Interlake had back-to-back 3-17 seasons.

Coincidentally, Bright used to coach with Belcher. Belcher will tell you that Bright helped him become coach of the year last year. The former partners sat next to each other at the Star Times luncheon this week.

``I knew when those two (coaching) jobs opened up at Bellevue and Newport that he (Bright) would be leaving,'' Belcher said. ``When you surround yourself with quality coaches, eventually they will be gone.''

Galloway's Bothell girls team finished 17-7, ending the season with consecutive losses to Newport and Lake Washington, teams it beat easily during the regular season.

So deep is the male talent in the area that not one player from Redmond, ranked No. 2 in the state, made the first-team All-KingCo Conference team. And two Mustangs, Jeff Potter and Derek Looney, will play for Division I colleges next season.

``This group is something special,'' Belcher said. ``These players know each other, have played together. You can see the closeness.''

The boys Star Times team has stellar credentials. Pope, decorated from coast to coast, is considered one of the best high-school post players in the country. He attended Nike's summer camp for the nation's top 100 seniors. He opted for Washington next season after turning down notables like Arizona, Kentucky and Syracuse. He is averaging about 26.6 points, 17 rebounds and five blocked shots per game.

Roberts is another graduate of the Nike camp. Both he and Pope were first-team Best in the West selections. Roberts, averaging 23.5 points, five assists and five steals per game, will attend California. He turned down Kansas, UCLA and Arizona.

Marshall, averaging 24.5 points and 12 rebounds per game, is headed for Connecticut. The power forward was involved in a fluke accident earlier this month but is recovering ahead of schedule. A fall during a dunk attempt caused Marshall a concussion and an injured wrist.

He and Boston were second-team Best in the West selections. Boston will join Pope next season at Washington. Wooed by half the Pac-10 teams and Notre Dame, Boston is averaging 18.7 points and four rebounds a game.

Boston's teammate, Jones, is the only underclassman on the boys team. The junior forward is already getting covetous looks from the major colleges.

The girls team is led by Smith, who will play for the nationally ranked Washington women's team next season. She is averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds per game and is considered the state's premier post player.

Smith, also recruited by Arizona State and USC, will face Estep and Landvatter today when her Quakers play the Mustangs for the Sea-King AAA District championship at Seattle Center Arena.

Estep and Landvatter are the leaders of a Redmond team whose starters all score in double figures. Landvatter, at center, is averaging 13.6 points and eight rebounds a game. Estep, at forward, is averaging 12.6 points and five rebounds.

``She can shoot from anywhere,'' Landvatter said of Estep.

Stafford and Dey are both juniors. Dey, who averaged 17.7 points and seven rebounds for Mercer Island, is also a state track champion in the 800 meters and her conference's top soccer scorer.

Like Dey, Stafford does it all for No. 1-ranked Auburn - drive, shoot and mostly score. Stafford, chosen the most valuable player in the South Puget Sound League's Puget Division, is averaging 15.5 points and seven rebounds.
