Lynden To Meet Grandview
TACOMA - Grandview High School is the two-time defending state Class A boys' basketball champion. Lynden, however, with only a forfeit marring its 24-1 record, is ranked No. 1.
And the Lions and No. 2 Grandview (24-1) will meet tonight at 7:30 in the first semifinal game in the state tournament at the Tacoma Dome.
In the second semifinal, scheduled to start at 9 p.m., No. 9-ranked Highland (18-9) will play No. 10 Toppenish (18-8).
In quarterfinal games yesterday, Lynden beat King's 61-53, Grandview got past Steilacoom 71-68, Highland bested Blaine 71-67 and Toppenish defeated Lake Roosevelt 62-38.
In loser-out games, Onalaska eliminated Tonasket 83-55, Ilwaco sidelined Oroville 55-46, Ridgefield ousted Medical Lake 91-60 and Seattle Christian eliminated Port Townsend 77-58.
-- LYNDEN 61, KING'S 53 - Brian Heppner scored 30 points for Lynden.
The Lions took the lead for good at 6-5 on Grant Bonsen's five-foot shot and eventually stretched their advantage to 12 points at 51-39 with five minutes left.
Neil Swinney had 17 points, Ed Raiford 15 and Ron Kirkpatrick 12 for King's (21-4).
-- GRANDVIEW 71, STEILACOOM 68 - David Pouliot, a 6-foot-10 senior center, scored 21 points for Grandview.
Steilacoom (16-9) had a 37-35 halftime advantage and led 55-51 with 1:09 left in the third quarter.
Grandview scored eight unanswered points before the Sentinels came back to tie the score at 66. Pouliot and Roy Garcia then made two free throws apiece to put the game out of Steilacoom's reach.
Cohen Morris paced the Sentinels with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
-- HIGHLAND 71, BLAINE 67 - Dayton Vickers scored 25 points and Greg Lockwood grabbed 19 rebounds for Highland against No. 8 Blaine.
Vickers got 16 points in the second half as Highland fought off a strong Blaine comeback. Blaine (17-8) cut a 55-36 deficit just before the end of the third quarter to 61-56 midway through the fourth quarter.
Lockwood, a 6-6 junior, finished with 17 points. Blaine (17-8) was led by Jared Liebert's 21 points and 10 rebounds.
-- TOPPENISH 62, LAKE ROOSEVELT 38 - Toppenish scored 25 of the game's last 26 points to beat Lake Roosevelt.
Ryker Labee scored 23 points, 9 in the last quarter, and Brandon Karas added 14 for the Wildcats.
With the score tied at 37 with 1:29 left in the third quarter, Toppenish outscored Lake Roosevelt 25-1 the rest of the way.
The Raiders (17-8) got 16 points from Karmen Blake and 13 points and 14 rebounds from Shawn Garvin.
