`Lawman' John Russell Dies At 70
LOS ANGELES - John Russell, a tall, dark and handsome actor best known in the title role of television's ``The Lawman,'' has died. He was 70.
Russell died Saturday of complications from emphysema at a Los Angeles hospital, his son, John James, said Tuesday.
He played the taciturn but warmhearted Marshal Dan Troop on ``The Lawman,'' which ran from 1958 to 1962 on ABC. Russell also appeared on television's ``Soldiers of Fortune,'' portraying one of two hired guns.
Russell appeared in dozens of movies, playing both good and bad guys, primarily in character or second-lead roles.
He became a regular in Clint Eastwood movies, playing Eastwood's commanding officer in ``The Outlaw Josey Wales.'' He also had roles in ``Rio Bravo'' and ``Pale Rider.''
Among his other pictures in a 40-year career were ``A Bell for Adano,'' ``Forever Amber,'' ``Yellowstone Kelly'' and ``Cannon for
Cordoba.''
