Driver Gets Year In Death Of 2 Girls

EVERETT - An Arlington truck driver was sentenced to a year in jail yesterday for driving while intoxicated the night his truck slid out of control and slammed into a car, killing two young girls.

Four months of the sentence were suspended for two years, meaning Daniel Brisbin won't have to serve that time unless he fails to live up to the other requirements of his sentence.

The other requirements include paying a $1,000 fine, attending a drunken-driving victims' panel and avoiding alcohol for two years.

The victims, Kami Moran, 7, and Nichole Moran, 4, suffered serious head injuries and died the day after the Feb. 14, 1990, crash.

Brisbin was convicted of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, in November after a jury trial.

The girls' parents, Lori and Michael Moran, wanted Brisbin to be charged with vehicular homicide, a felony, but Snohomish County Prosecutor Seth Dawson told them he couldn't do that because prosecutors couldn't prove Brisbin's drunkenness on the icy night caused the accident.

The prosecutor's office is helping the family get the law changed so vehicular-homicide charges are possible without proof a driver's drinking was the cause.
