Sober, Supportive Trips Offered For Recovering Addicts
Sober Vacations International, specializing in vacations for recovering alcoholics and addicts and their families, is starting the new year with a series of vacations based on 12-step recovery programs.
They feature an Alcoholics Anonymous-style one-day-at-a-time program drawing on the strength, hope and experience of support groups and meetings while vacationing. Several Club Med ``Sober Village'' trips are planned, with no alcohol or drugs allowed.
Upcoming, for example, is a Club Med Sober Village in Martinique Jan. 26-Feb. 2 with an all-inclusive price of $1,574 from New York, including round-trip airfare, accommodations, meals, entertainment, sports and more. There will be as many as 15 12-step meetings per day. Additonal trips include a Club Med Copper Mountain Sober ski trip to Colorado and a Bahamas Sober Village at Club Med Eleuthera July 6-13.
Sober Vacations is the idea of two brothers: Steve Abrams, a recovering alcoholic, and Guy Grand, a recovering drug addict, who are both in 12-step recovery programs. They run Sober Vacations International, 2365 Westwood Blvd., Suite 21, Los Angeles, CA 90064; phone: 1-213-470-0606.
The idea came from a trip they took along with recovering, supportive friends in their early days of sobriety about a decade ago.
