All-American Honor -- Dedication, Hard Work Pay Off For Greg Lewis
GREG Lewis, All-American. It didn't come easy.
Lewis didn't arrive at the University of Washington from Seattle's Ingraham High School with super-star credentials. He made hard work his credo. And it paid off.
Named first team All America by The Sporting News, Lewis is the first Husky running back to earn that high an honor since the legendary Hugh McElhenny in 1951.
McElhenny, widely recruited California junior college phenomenon, was destined for the stardom that eventually took him to the National Football League Hall of Fame.
Lewis, a home-grown product, came out of the much-maligned Metro League. He had to prove himself. A strong, supportive mother instilled a work ethic in Lewis that produced improvement, game by game.
He was more to this Pac-10 championship Husky team that will meet Iowa in the Rose Bowl Jan. 1. He became its heart and soul - its leader. He was named most inspirational player.
Lewis has provided an excellent role model for this area's high-school players - on and off the field. He won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back based on ability and citizenship.
Greg Lewis, All-American. A well-earned honor.
