Barokas Powers Islander Win Again

BELLEVUE - Senior forward Charlie Barokas scored 20 points to lead Mercer Island to a 92-56 triumph over Bellevue in a KingCo Conference boys basketball game last night.

It marked the second consecutive game in which Barokas has led Mercer Island (3-0) in scoring.

All 13 Islanders got into the game, and 11 scored. Barokas' points included four three-point goals. Forward Scott Didrickson scored 19 points. Guard Dean Scalzo had eight steals to go with his eight points and created several more turnovers. Fred Brown came off the bench to score 11.

Matt Bell scored 15 points and Erik Williams chipped in 14 for Bellevue.

-- At Sammamish 49, Woodinville 46 - Rich Brunhaver scored eight of his game-high 19 points and Jason Griffith scored all eight of his in the fourth quarter as the Totems held off the Falcons.

Brunhaver made two free throws with two seconds remaining to secure the triumph. Sammamish (1-1, 2-2), which trailed 40-30 early in the fourth quarter, used a full-court press to key the comeback.

-- At Lake Washington 58, Bothell 51 - Brian Stoltz scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds - eight of them on the offensive end - to key the Kangaroos' victory in the KingCo opener for both teams.

Ryan Sowards, the Bothell guard who had averaged 32 points per game in Bothell's first three games, scored a season-low 21 points thanks in part to Brendan Hare's defense.

-- Newport 60, at Inglemoor 52 - Mark Pope scored 24 points and Mark Odsather had 18 to power the Knights (3-1 overall).

Steve Shepard connected for 16 points and Aaron Chilcote added 13 for Inglemoor (2-2 overall), which trailed 49-32 after three quarters.

-- At Redmond 76, Interlake 51 - Brian Lewallen, Derrick Looney and Barry Johnson combined for 45 points to power Redmond, which outscored Interlake 26-8 in the second quarter to take command.

Seth Cichanski scored 19 points and Matt McPoland added 13 to lead the Saints, who shot only 31 percent from the field.

Seamount League

-- At Highline 78, Liberty 75 - Tyler Geving made 6 of 6 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and Matt Pohlman made 3 of 4 to key the Pirates' Seamount League victory over Liberty.

Randy Fjeld, a 6-foot-4 senior post, scored 28 points to lead Liberty (1-1, 2-3).

-- Mount Rainier 64, at Mount Si 41 - The defending Seamount champs evened their record at 1-1 by blowing the Wildcats out in the first quarter, 24-5. Jon McGregor and Josh Hamik had 13 apiece for the Wilcats (0-3, 0-5).
