Tigard, Roseburg Reach Oregon High School 4A Final
EUGENE, Ore. - The Tigard Tigers earned their first ticket to the Oregon Class 4A prep football championship by downing defending champion Ashland 21-6 in a semifinal yesterday.
The Tigers will play Roseburg, which shut out No. 1-ranked Sunset 37-0 in the other semifinal, in the Class 4A title game next Saturday.
Tigard put the first points on the scoreboard with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Asher in the second quarter.
Tigard, ranked No. 5 going into the game at Autzen Stadium, led 7-0 at halftime. The Tigers (12-1) made the second touchdown early in the third quarter on a 43-yard run by Mike Kinkade.
The No. 8-ranked Ashland Grizzlies (10-3) closed to within 14-6 after an interception by Matt Wells. He returned the ball to the Tigard 36-yard line. Ashland scored in five plays when Kevin Greene made a 35-yard pass to Jason Toney, who was at the 1-yard line, and Greene scored from the 1-yard line.
The final touchdown came after Tigard stopped Ashland at the Ashland 35-yard line. Tigard scored in seven running plays by Asher, including a 3-yard touchdown run with 1:44 left in the game.
Tigard lost to Ashland 33-6 in a semifinal last year.
Roseburg 37, Sunset 0
-- EUGENE, Ore. - Greg Fogle rushed for 217 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead No. 2 Roseburg into the 4A final with an upset of top-ranked Sunset.
Fogle's touchdowns came on runs of 20, 99 and 48 yards and on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Todd Black.
The 99-yard run came with 2:15 to play in the first half after Roseburg stopped Sunset on fourth-and-goal at the Indians' 1-yard line.
Fogle took a pitch-out and raced down the right sideline to give the Indians a 13-0 lead. Sunset never got inside Roseburg's 20-yard line again.
Roseburg, 13-0, is headed to the state title game for the seventh time.
Roseburg's defense smothered Sunset - allowing just 42 yards rushing and 85 yards passing. Meanwhile, Roseburg rolled up 452 yards total offense.
Fogle's counterpart, Keith Macon, managed just 39 yards rushing for Sunset.
The two running backs were among the best in the state coming into the game.
Fogle now has 2,134 yards rushing and 34 touchdowns this season. Macon has rushed for 1,892 yards and 34 touchdowns.
Black threw for 66 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 59 yards for Roseburg. He also had two interceptions on defense.
Sunset wound up 12-1.
