Huskers Put Gophers In A Hole
LINCOLN, Neb. - Mickey Joseph ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more in Nebraska's 42-point first half as the eighth-ranked Cornhuskers dismantled Minnesota 56-0 yesterday.
Joseph, making his second start in place of injured Mike Grant, ran 4 yards for his first score in the first quarter. He ran 1 yard for another TD and threw 27 yards to Jon Bostick and 1 yard to Chris Garrett for touchdowns in a 28-point second quarter. It was Garrett's seventh career catch at Nebraska and sixth for a touchdown.
The Cornhuskers (3-0) opened a 42-0 halftime lead and piled up 379 of their 564 total yards in the first 30 minutes.
Freshman I-back Derek Brown, who finished with three touchdowns, opened the scoring with a 7-yard run. Brown, a third-stringer making his first start in place of injured Leodis Flowers and Scott Baldwin, ran for 103 yards in the first half and finished with 120 on 21 carries, including two TDs.
Minnesota's offense went nowhere against Nebraska. The Gophers' deepest penetration was the Nebraska 43 in the second quarter.
-- AT NO. 11 OKLAHOMA 52, TULSA 10 - Two quick touchdown passes from Steve Collins to Artie Guess gave No. 11 Oklahoma an early lead.
Oklahoma (3-0) threw 25 passes, six short of the school record set in 1938, and its 12 completions were three short of the school mark. Collins completed eight of 19 for 165 yards before sitting down midway through the third quarter.
The Sooners' first two possessions ended with touchdown passes, the first time that has happened since Dec. 2, 1972, against Oklahoma State.
