Things are winding down for the Goodwill Games. Consolation and medal-round games have begun, with more finals in team events set for tomorrow. Here's a brief look at some of yesterday's Games happenings:

U.S., Canada meet in semis

The Goodwill Games hockey tournament begins the medal round today in the Tacoma Dome. The favored Soviet Union (3-0) meets Sweden (2-1) in one semifinal at 2 p.m. The United States (2-1) plays Canada (3-0), which is also likely to have a large fan contingent, at 10:30 a.m.

U.S. Coach Jeff Sauer said the Canadians, who surprised observers by winning all three preliminary games, had some familiar faces on the squad.

Some Canadians are on U.S. college or minor-league teams.

``We match up very closely to the Canadian team,'' Sauer said. ``We know each other. It will be a very intense game and a very competitive game.''

But the better game may be the Soviet Union against Sweden.

Although the Soviets are the defending world champions, the Swedes surprised them by winning the recent European championships.

``The Swedish player today is not afraid to meet the Russians,'' Sweden Coach Conny Evensson said.

The Soviets seem to have weathered the recent departure of Sergei Fedorov in fine shape.

What anger they may have had was vented on the U.S. team in a 10-1 victory.

The Americans have been spoiling for a rematch since the Monday night debacle, and that would occur tomorrow afternoon if both teams make the finals.

``I'd love to face them again,'' said Tony Amonte, one of three Boston University teammates who form the U.S. team's top-scoring line. ``Our whole team would like to face them.

Czechs, W. Germans win

Libor Dolana scored three goals to power the Czechoslovakian hockey team to an 8-4 victory over Finland in the fifth-place game in the Goodwill Games hockey tournament yesterday in Kennewick.

The Czechs (2-3) went without a victory during the round-robin portion of the tournament, but managed to get their offense going in the consolation game against Finland (2-3).

Finnish goaltender Sakari Lindfors, who faced 42 shots, kept the Czechs scoreless until Dolana scored at 14:34 of the first period. Finn Jari Pulliainen tied it at 1-1 at 15:22 of the first before the Czechs pulled away, getting to late goals in the first period to hold a 3-1 advantage.

Dolana made it 4-1 just 45 seconds into the second period. The game would turn defensive until 2:12 of the third period, when Czech Lubomir Kolnik scored the first of seven goals.

Czech goaltender Petr Briza faced 29 shots, giving up goals to Juha Riihaijarvi, Jari Hirsimaki, Pekka Tuomisto and Pulliainen.

In the seventh-place game, four players recorded goals to give West Germany a 4-2 victory over Switzerland.

Tobias Abstreiter, Thomas Werner, Ladislav Strompf and Jurgen Trattner scored for West Germany (1-4). Jean-Jacques Aeschlimann and Raymond Walder scored for Switzerland (1-4). West German goaltender Josef Heiss faced 30 shots.
