Campusano's Hit In 9Th Spoils Drabek's No-Hitter

PHILADELPHIA - The year of the no-hitter is the year of the one-hitter, too.

Doug Drabek's no-hit bid was broken up by Sil Campusano with two out in the ninth inning last night as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-0.

Campusano, a .188 hitter who entered the game in the sixth inning, lined a single to right-center field on a 3-2 pitch.

``It was a fastball, but I got it up a little,'' Drabek said. ``I was trying to go inside, but I guess it wasn't inside enough. Give him credit, it was a solid hit.''

At almost the same moment, the New York Yankees broke up a no-hit bid by Cleveland's Tom Candiotti with two out in the bottom of the eighth. Had either no-hitter been completed, it would have been the eighth of the season, a modern record.

Instead, it became the eighth one-hitter of the season.

``I didn't tell myself anything,'' Drabek said. ``When I started to think about it, I just shook my head and said `Don't think about it.' I'm glad to get the win, that's the main thing. I can't complain about 11 runs.''

Pittsburgh had 18 hits, including four by Sid Bream. Andy Van Slyke drove in four runs and Bream three.

Drabek, 28, a right-hander in his fifth major-league season, had allowed just one runner - a two-out walk to John Kruk in the fourth inning - before Campusano's hit.

Campusano was just 9 for 48 this season before the single.

``I wasn't nervous at all,'' he said. ``I didn't feel any pressure. You either get a hit or you don't. It's no big deal.''

Campusano, 23, entered the game in the sixth inning as a replacement for center fielder Len Dykstra, the leading hitter in the major leagues.

``It was one of those things. I wanted to rest Lenny and Sil ends up getting the hit,'' Phillie Manager Nick Leyva said. ``I never want a no-hitter pitched against my team.''

Darren Daulton, the next batter, flied to right to end the game and give Drabek the first one-hitter of his career.

Second baseman Jose Lind had preserved Drabek's bid with one out in the eighth when he dived to his left to snag Kruk's hard-hit grounder, then threw from his knees to first for the out. The 36,057 fans in Veterans Stadium gave Lind and Drabek a rousing ovation.
