World Champ Norwood Wins Pentathlon

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - World champion Lori Norwood won the women's modern penatathlon national championships yesterday.

Norwood, who last year became the first American woman to win the world title, set a world record with 5,604 points in the three-day competition.

She had finished second in 1989.

Rob Stull won the men's national championship, despite inflamed ligaments in his right knee, surpassing his younger brother Doug in the riding event.

It was the first national pentathlon title for both Norwood and Stull.

After the running event yesterday morning, Stull was in second place, trailing Doug by two points with only the riding left.

Rob Stull drew his least favorite horse, Maude, for the ride and thought his chances were slim.

But Stull had a perfect ride over the 15-jump course for 1,100 points.

Doug's horse, Molaki, clipped a rail on the first jump, but it stayed up and he was eight seconds over the 1:45 allotted for the

course.
