Separate Accidents On Roads Take 6 Lives

Five people were killed in two separate automobile accidents yesterday in the Seattle area, and a Mason County man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a pickup.

A woman and her daughter were killed, and a 4-year-old boy was injured when a pickup truck and car collided at the Park Avenue exit under Interstate 405 in Renton yesterday afternoon.

Soon Yim Hong, 71, of Seattle and Hwa Ja Yoo, 49, of Everett died at the scene. The boy, Yoo's nephew, was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was in satisfactory condition today.

The accident occurred about 12:20 p.m. when a pickup westbound on Park Avenue made a left turn onto the freeway entrance and hit the eastbound car in which the two women and boy were traveling, according to Renton police Lt. J. Peach.

The pickup's driver and two passengers suffered only minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Earlier yesterday, the driver and two of three passengers were killed in a single-car accident at Lake Washington Boulevard South and South Horton Street.

Herbert Noble Jr., 29; Solomon Hammond Jr., 26; and James Fleeks, 31, all of Seattle, died at the scene.

Lisa Marie Foy, 23, also a passenger, walked away from the accident unharmed.

According to police reports, the accident occurred shortly after midnight near Stan Sayres Pits on Lake Washington when the car driven by Noble rounded a corner at high speed, crossed the center line and slammed into a tree along the lake shore with a force that split the car in half.

Noble and Fleeks were thrown from the car. Fleeks' body was found in the middle of the roadway; Noble's body was found on a grassy bank about 20 feet east of the accident.

In the Mason County accident, a State Patrol spokesman said Richard Velkov, 27, of Shelton suffered massive chest injuries in the accident at 4:45 p.m. yesterday and was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he died.

Velkov apparently crossed the center line of Lake Cushman Road about three miles west of Hoodsport and collided with a pickup driven by Gordon Lueckenotte, 38, of Tacoma, who was not seriously hurt.
