Dominating Day For Ducks -- Oregon Athletes Win Eight Events At Pac-10 Track Championships

The last time any flock of ducks had a better day was the end of hunting season.

The Oregon Ducks dominated the first day of the weekend Pac-10 track championships yesterday before 2,702 fans in Husky Stadium.

Duck men won five of seven events and Oregon women captured three of six finals.

Oregon men, who had picked up 10 early points when Pedro daSilva won the decathlon Tuesday, finished the day with 89 points. Washington State was second with 44 and UCLA was third with 41 but the Bruins could score big today. Washington was seventh with 12 points.

Oregon Coach Bill Dellinger said, ``With 89 points, we are ahead of our pace. . . . Whoever makes a run at us Sunday will have to make a pretty strong run.''

Oregon women finished the day with 61 points. Favored UCLA, which should make its move today, has 34; Washington 27, and Stanford 22.

Duck male winners were Scott McGee in the hammer throw (225-1), Brian Cullen in the pole vault (17-0 3/4), Daniel Lopez in the steeplechase (8:38.1), Latin Berry in the long jump, winning his third straight league title (26-2 3/4) and Peter Fonseca in the 10,000 meters (29:41.00).

Duck women winners were Paula Berry in the javelin (178-1), Liz Wilson in the 3,000 (9:26.19), and Stephanie Wessell in the 10,000 (34:24.9 unofficially).

Duck men earned 18 points with a 1-2 finish in the pole vault and 15 points by going 1-4-6 in the steeplechase.

The pole vault marked the first time since 1987 that a Duck vaulter had even cleared an opening height.

Cullen and teammate Mark Vanderville, from Kentridge High School and Highline Community College, both cleared 17-0 3/4 but Cullen won on fewer misses.

``I really expected 17-4 to win the meet,'' said Cullen. ``We felt a lot of pressure. You could sense it from the coaches.''

WSU's Patrik Johanson, who had the league's top vault of 17-8 1/2 going into the meet, finished sixth as one of four vaulters clearing 16-8 3/4.

In the steeplechase, Lopez took an early lead and held off a late challenge by defending champion Marty Stroschein of WSU. Shroschein's timing was off approaching the final barrier and he chopped his steps.

``He opened the door a little bit for me,'' said Lopez, who finished second to the Cougar at last year's conference meet.

``That last hurdle got me,'' said Stroschein, a senior from Boise.

Lopez was clocked in 8:38.1 and Stroschein's time was 8:39.2. Cougar John Hill was third in 8:42.9, qualifying for the NCAA meet in two weeks at Duke.

One of the most surprised winners was Arizona State's Gea Johnson in the women's long jump.

She won with a leap of 20-9 3/4 but thought someone else had leaped 20-10.

``I didn't know I had won,'' she said. A teammate passed the good news by sending her a thumbs-up signal at the high-jump pit where she was warming up for her next event.

Tracie Millett, UCLA junior from Auburn High School, won the shot put with a toss of 53-9 3/4. Georgette Reed of Washington State, a former swimmer, was second with a school-record 51-11 3/4 that automatically qualified her for the NCAA championships.

Favorite Shane Collins of Arizona won the men's shot with a toss of 63-3 3/4.

Another heavily favored Wildcat, Julieanne Broughton, won the women's high jump with a leap of 5-10 3/4.

In the women's 3,000, Oregon senior Wilson won her first conference track championship by dethroning Jennifer Robertson of WSU. Wilson was clocked in 9:26.19; Robertson, from Puyallup High School, had a 9.29.07.

Washington State's Stefan Wikstrom, who throws in pain because of a shoulder injury that has bothered him for five years, won the men's javelin with a toss of 244-7.

Wikstrom made only three throws and his second one was the best.

Art Skipper of Oregon was second at 231-9 and Darryl Roberson of Washington, two-time Pac-10 champion, was third at 228-3.

The most heralded athlete in the meet, Olympic 400-meter champion Steve Lewis of UCLA, advanced to today's final with a 45.98 clocking in the 400 prelims.

Lewis, who had run only two previous races this season because of hamstring injuries, started cautiously then turned on the jets before downshifting near the finish line.

``I feel strong; I feel really good,'' said Lewis.

Lewis is expected to anchor the Bruin 1600-meter relay today.

The Huskies' relay team, which has the Pac-10's best mark of 3:07.19, encountered a rules obstacle apparently caused by a broken pipe. Bernard Ellison, the Husky hurdler who anchors the relay, missed his heat of the 110-meter hurdles because of a broken pipe at the house where he lives, according to teammates.

Ellison was disqualified from all meet events under the rule that says missing one event disqualifies an athlete in all remaining events. Husky efforts to have him reinstated failed.

A Pac-10 spokesman, Troy Hanson, said the appeals committee considered the Husky request even though it was filed late. He said lack of proof that a broken pipe indeed was the problem was a factor in the decision.

UW Coach Ken Shannon said freshman 800-meter runner Mitch Leffler probably will replace Ellison on the 1600-meter relay.

The relay includes Orlando McKay, who entered the meet with the league's best 400 time (45.81) but just missed qualifying yesterday for today's finals.
