Samuel Mccall Iii, Former Governor's Son
PORTLAND, Ore. - Samuel Walker McCall III, son of former Gov. Tom McCall, died Sunday at the age of 40.
McCall, who had been in and out of state institutions and drug treatment programs since becoming addicted to drugs at age 13, apparently died of an overdose of methamphetamine, police said.
An autopsy was performed yesterday, but results will not be released until toxicology reports are available, the state medical examiner's office said.
McCall's addictions became difficult problems for his father, both as state secretary of state and during his two terms as governor.
His family said an appendectomy, followed by a lengthy illness, led to his use of amphetamines, heroin and marijuana.
In recent years he had held and lost a number of jobs.
McCall's father, a Republican, was governor from 1967 to 1975. He died in 1983.
