Wilson, Repeats; Knights' Taner Wins Two

Wilson High School repeated as state Class AAA swim champion without benefit of an individual championship.

Instead, the Rams put it together as a team. They started the finals last night in the University of Washington pool by shattering an eight-year-old 200-yard medley-relay record.

Wilson totaled 127 points and had the title wrapped up going into the closing 400 freestyle relay, in which the Rams did not have an entry.

Bellevue took second with 116.

The Rams' medley-relay time of 1:36.48 bettered the mark of 1:37.00 set by another Wilson championship team in 1982.

``We thought we had it Friday. We felt we could do it pretty easy today,'' said relay anchorman Jon Hearn.

Swimming the other legs were Bret Foreman, Bill Sullivan and Rich Butler.

Hearn said his 50-yard split of 21.86 was only so-so. He said his foot slipped on the start.

His brother, Jason, was the team leader a year ago, winning the 500 freestyle.

Ugur Taner, Newport High sophomore, was the most spectacular individual.

As a freshman a year ago he won two events, but was disqualified in one for an illegal kick off a turn.

This time Taner became the state's fastest sprinter ever. His 20.66-second clocking in the 50 freestyle wiped out the mark set in 1988 by three-time state champion Brett Garr of Bellevue at 20.78. His 45.09 in the 100 erased the mark of five-time champion Andy Lloyd of Mercer Island.

KingCo Conference swimmers won every individual title in an unprecedented sweep.

The 1-2 finish of Raoul Langin and Mark Roggenkamp in diving gave Bellevue 29 points on the way to its runner-up finish behind Wilson.

``We needed a break, something to happen to Wilson to beat them,'' said Paul Craig, Bellevue coach.

``Our guys did improve some places. Next year nobody's going to touch us,'' he said.

Bellevue has everybody back and should be a power in 1991.

Eric Mix of Issaquah, first in the 200 and 500 free, paced the Indians to third place, with 96 points.

Jason Blaylock's victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke led Redmond to fourth place, with 94 points.

Inglemoor's Gary Ames and Mercer Island's Tom Campbell were the other titlists.

For the second straight night, Campbell broke the 100 breaststroke mark, lowering it to 56.50.

Blaylock was three seconds slower than the state individual medley record of 1:49.30 set in 1988 by Lloyd. Even so, his time earned automatic all-America status and qualified him for senior U.S. nationals along with Taner.

Wilson's Foreman took second to Taner in the 100 and Butler was runner-up to Blaylock in the individual medley.

Issaquah's Mix ended a four-year wait for a state title when he won the 200 freestyle. He is his school's first champion since 1982, when Tony Morgan won the backstroke.

``It's been a long wait,'' said Issaquah Coach Jerry Johnston. ``When he came here as a freshman he swam 1:46 and didn't make the finals.

This time Mix took honors with a 1:41.35.

Campbell challenged Mix early in the 200, but Johnson said, ``Eric's never lost to Tommy in that event. That was a good swim for Tommy too.''
