Richard Guy Sworn In As High Court Justice

Richard P. Guy, the state's newest Supreme Court justice, was formally sworn in yesterday in a ceremony at the newly refurbished Temple of Justice.

The Spokane lawyer is the second member of the high court from Eastern Washington.

On hand for the event was Gov. Booth Gardner, who appointed Guy last October to succeed outgoing Justice Vernon Pearson. Guy, 57, has been serving on the high court for three months and must stand for election in November for the position's remaining four years.

Guy gained his law degree from Gonzaga University and served in the Army before holding various legal positions in state government. In 1961 he became a Spokane County deputy prosecutor and in 1977 moved into a Superior Court judgeship.
