Big Three Head State's Blue-Chip Recruits

While the overall state crop of high-school football prospects is being labeled ``average'' at worst and ``pretty good'' at best, a handful have major-college recruiters genuinely excited.

And there are plenty of other high-school heroes who just might turn out to be Saturday afternoon celebrities. As any recruiter will tell you, gauging potential is an inexact science.

So science aside, the state's three most heralded prospects appear to be quarter-

back Drew Bledsoe of Walla Walla, quarterback-linebacker Nate Holdren of Richland and 292-pound lineman Andrew Peterson of South Kitsap.

``As far as I'm concerned, those three are the blue-chippers this year,'' said one evaluator from a lower-division college.

Six other players join Bledsoe, Holdren and Peterson atop The Seattle Times' annual Chip List, a listing of the state's best high school football prospects.

Also included on The Times' blue-chip list are Federal Way receiver Lake Dawson, who is being pursued by Notre Dame, and Mead kicker Travis Hanson, brother of Washington State Cougar All-America Jason Hanson.

The other blue-chip designees are Kingbowl hero Deron Pointer, a wide receiver-defensive back out of Curtis of suburban Tacoma, linemen Steve Hardin of Snohomish, Eric Ness of South Kitsap and defensive back Myron Wise of Lakes.

In compiling its sixth annual chip lists, The Times conducted dozens of interviews with sportswriters, college coaches and high-school coaches throughout the state.

The players are sorted onto the various lists according to potential: Blue chip players are considered possible major-college stars; Red chip players are likely Pac-10 and definite Big Sky Conference performers, and White chippers are considered small-college prospects with an outside shot at major-college success.

Of course, all this is speculation, as are other listings such as the annual Best in the West, a widely quoted list published by the Long Beach Press-Telegram. The results will be borne out in a small way as players sign with colleges and universities, and ultimately as they mature and play college football.

That process begins in earnest Feb. 14, the first day high school players are eligible to sign college letters-of-intent.

While the state lacks an abundance of headliners this year, it appears richer than usual in ``red chips'' - athletes considered good enough to make a Pac-10 roster but who definitely could play in the Big Sky Conference (Division I-AA).

There also are dozens of small-college prospects, some of whom could defy labeling and wind up in Pac-10 uniforms.

Fear of violating NCAA rules has driven most college coaches and recruiting coordinators into silence on even broad subjects such as the overall assessment of potential recruits in the state.

Many of them lamented one trend, poor grades and failing SAT scores among several urban athletes. Those players are included on Times' lists because they could end up as Proposition 48 students.

For example, Wise, a defensive back from Lakes who has eye-popping athletic ability but poor grades, may be headed for a community college.

One Pac-10 recruiter called the crop ``pretty good'' and said a lot of seniors showed dramatic improvement in the fall.

Ron Siegel, who does part-time scouting and has followed football recruiting in the state for decades, calls this year's crop ``average.''

``The strength is in linemen and linebackers,'' said Siegel. ``Bledsoe could rank with the state's best prep quarterback prospects of the 1980's - Mark Rypien of Spokane (Shadle Park), Chris Chandler of Everett, Steve Pelluer of Bellevue (Interlake), Cary Conklin of Yakima (Eisenhower) and Billy Joe Hobert of Puyallup.''

The Huskies are not expected to match last year, when they got 12 of 21 freshman recruits from in-state. Conversely, the Cougars might exceed last year's total of seven prep recruits from the state.

UW and WSU can afford to be picky because California, with its 1,127 high schools and population of 28 million, as usual is full of talent and the goal of many young athletes is to play in the Pac-10.

The Times' blue-chippers:

DREW BLEDSOE, quarterback, 6-5, 215, Walla Walla: Right arm is a gun. . . . Threw for 2,560 yards and 25 touchdowns and was intercepted only six times last season. . . . His father, Mac, was a UW lineman in the late 1960's. That might help the Huskies. Proximity to Pullman helps Cougars, who covet him . . . Visiting WSU, UW, Stanford and Miami.

LAKE DAWSON, wide receiver, 6-2, 185, Federal Way: Gatorade Player of the Year in the state. . . . A track star who led South Puget Sound League with 40 catches for 800 yards and 16 TDs. . . . Personal-best of 13.9 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and finished second in the event at state last spring. . . . Only question some raise is whether he's a track star who happens to be good at football rather than a born football player. . . . ``It's going to be between Washington and Notre Dame,'' said Dawson, who also visited California and WSU.

TRAVIS HANSON, kicker, 5-11, 172, Mead: Younger brother of WSU sophomore All-America Jason Hanson, which means this guy has genes. . . . Also has a powerful leg as shown by a field goal of 49 yards in a game and 65 yards in practice. . . . Hit 5 of 7 field goals last season. . . . WSU wanted him to sit behind his brother for two years, but he said ``no thanks'' and has committed to the Huskies. . . Will be the first high-school kicker ever given a scholarship by Coach Don James.

STEVE HARDIN, offensive lineman, 6-6, 285, Snohomish: Just a growing boy with size-16 shoes. . . . . Hard worker who finished sixth in state wrestling tournament. . . . . Not being recruited by Washington . . . Considering Michigan State, WSU, Oregon and UCLA.

NATE HOLDREN, quarterback-linebacker, 6-5, 240, Richland: Seattle Times player of the year. . . . The only state player to make even the honorable-mention list of national scout Max Emfinger, who labeled his position ``athlete.'' . . . As quarterback, he threw for 1,830 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 17 TDs last season. . . . . Made more than 70 tackles as a linebacker and that's where most colleges envision him playing. . . . Wants to play baseball as well as football and eliminated UW because baseball program isn't strong. . . . . Visiting Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Michigan, WSU and Miami.

ERIC NESS, lineman, 6-5, 250, South Kitsap: Strong athlete who played best in big games. . . . Didn't receive as much publicity as teammate Peterson but some rival coaches say Ness gave them more trouble. . . . Good quickness and endurance. . . . . Committed to WSU while on recruiting trip to the Palouse.

ANDREW PETERSON, lineman, 6-6, 292, South Kitsap: Recruiters across the nation are aware of this agile bulldozer. . . . Was listed as among top 50 seniors in Street and Smith's football publication. . . . Could have visited anywhere in the country but is limiting his trips to WSU, UW and USC.

DERON POINTER, wide receiver-defensive back, 6-0, 170, Curtis: Boosted his stock with two touchdowns in the state championship game, one of them a 67-yard interception return. . . . Has good speed and change of direction. . . . Finished year with 42 receptions for 888 yards and 11 TDs. . . . Made four interceptions and returned two for TDs. . . . Nephew of The Pointer Sisters of singing fame. . . . . Considered a major-league baseball prospect and wants to play baseball in college, too. . . . Looking at Oregon State, WSU, UW, Boise State.

MYRON WISE, DB-athlete, 6-1, 170, Lakes of suburban Tacoma - Terrific talent, terrible grades. . . . Averaged 8.9 yards a carry as a tailback and 152 all-purpose yards a game. . . . At state AAA track meet last spring, he won 400-meter dash in 48.09 seconds and 300-meter hurdles in 37.66 and finished second in long jump at 23-1 3/4. . . . . Poor grades have scared most schools away, but Arkansas and UW are keeping in touch. . . . Community college is most realistic possibility.

Washington has received oral commitments from five in-state players: blue-chip kicker Hanson and red-chippers Richie Chambers, linebacker, Lake Stevens; Tyson Pollman, linebacker-tight end, White Pass; Mike Derrow, linebacker, Decatur; and Russell Hairston, defensive back, Newport.

Also, Paxton Tailele, a junior college free safety at College of The Desert in Palm Desert, Calif., is Washington-bound.

Washington State has oral commitments from blue-chip lineman Ness of South Kitsap and red-chippers Paul Reed, linebacker from Mountain View-Vancouver, and Ron Childs, running back-defensive back from Kamiakin High in Kennewick.

Already enrolled at WSU are junior-college recruits Darryl Hamilton, a free safety from Cerritos JC in Norwalk, Calif., and Tino Romero, defensive lineman from College of the Redwoods in Eureka, Calif.
